June 2020 Newsletter

June 2020 Newsletter Commodore’s Log                                                                                 Marilyn Allen

The Salty Dogs are sailing!  Our Ladies’ Day sail will have taken place on May 30 by the time you read this, so hopefully we had great weather and good attendance.  Thank you, Gary Kieft for organizing.

At our (last I hope) Virtual meeting on May 14, I explained some modifications we’ll be making to our events to be safe and stay within the county and state guidelines while still having fun!

  1. Boat capacity will be limited to enable social distancing so if you want to participate in an event, best get your donation in as soon as the event is posted. You can pay on-line or by check and your payment secures your reservation.  We have some skippers who are anxious to sail!
  2. We’ll need to limit the size of our events or at the very least, separate out into two groups of no more than 10. That, along with social distancing should be easy.  I know a place at Chatfield with 2 tables, well separated.
  3. Masks may be required at the discretion of the captain. The captains may have other requirements and we will honor those.  It’s her/his boat and we appreciate the participation. SOCIAL DISTANCING AND LIBERAL USE OF DISINFECTANT WIPES AND GEL WILL BE A CLUB REQUIREMENT.  It is now a requirement on the Why Buy boats that they be washed down after every use, and crew should be willing to help our club skippers if they would like this.  Skippers, throw in a spray bottle of biodegradable soap and a long handled brush.
  4. SALTY DOGS! Always bring a mask.  You never know when you’ll need one, and most folks in the parks are wearing a mask whenever they’re around other people, especially when distancing isn’t possible.

WE CAN DO THIS FOLKS!  Just following a few simple rules will allow us to enjoy our summer and spend time with our sailing friends.  A mask isn’t my favorite fashion accessory either, but it’s a small price to pay to protect my health and the health of the people I’m around.

Check the sailing schedule.

Some sail dates and locations have been changed.

The concert sails at Cherry Creek will be more of a Dry Land event when there is live music.  We don’t have enough boat capacity at Cherry Creek to be able to do a sailing event.  Gary may move a couple of week night sails to Chatfield.  Check the schedule.

Don’t forget Gari Westkott’s party on Independence Day, we’re still planning the Lake Mac  and Dillon multi-days sails and we’ll hopefully have our July meeting at Chatfield – inside or outside, byofandb (food and beverage) or……?  Planning has been challenging, but hey—we’re going to be on the water!

KAYAK ANYONE?  A couple of us have been out in our inflatable kayaks lately and it’s really fun!  We’ve done Cherry Creek and Chatfield and Barr Lake is awesome.  No motor boats!  Our plans are to haul our kayaks to Gross Reservoir out of Boulder, go to Dillon, Aurora Res (no motor boats) maybe venture down the Platte and more.  If anyone wants to join a sub-club called the Salty Kayakers, shoot me an email and we’ll get something planned.  Perfect social distancing, no masks necessary once we leave the dock and we could even raft up and have a meal together!  Kayaks can be rented at Chatfield every day and at Barr lake on Saturdays.

Thanks to all the folks who have been planning events for the year.

Be sure to thank them BY SHOWING UP FOR EVENTS!

See you on the water.

Membership Report                                                                             Ronni Willcox

As of May 26 the Salty Dog Sailing Club has welcomed two new members from Centennial, which brings our current club membership to 41.

Our Salty Dog Meetup Group has added 18 interested people since the start of 2020.

The current social distancing situation is still throwing a wet blanket on gaining potential new members.

However, we remain hopeful in attracting new members when the current situation is resolved and we can resume a more normal sailing schedule.

If you haven’t already joined or renewed, please do so soon at our On-Line Payment link:

Big Mac Trip is Open!

July 23rd—26th, 2020

The Salty Dogs will be going to Lake McConaughy from July 23rd—26th. We will be staying at Admiral’s Cove again this year. Because of the Covid situation there’s a few minor changes. If you will be making your reservation for a cabin or motel room there, they will have sheets and towels but not blankets or bedcovers. If you have a kitchen unit you will have pots and pans but you will not have plates, glasses, cups, or silverware. Just bring some paper products. There are no restrictions for camping sites. The restaurant will be open but only 6 people per table. Not sure if they will have a band Saturday night or not. You must register for this trip as there are limited spots on the boats. We have FOUR BOATS this year with 11 crew spots available. Your check or online payment will reserve your spot on this trip. The price of this trip is only the price to bring the boats up. YOU are responsible for getting your own reservation for lodging! For those of you who camp, since there’s limited campsites the club went ahead to reserve two campsites and you will be responsible to pay the club back for those sites. The price does include a pot luck dinner on Saturday night.

The price of the trip from July 23rd—26th is $145 per person! Please pay online or mail your check (payable to Salty Dogs) to Diana Bliss 7069 Xenon Ct, Arvada 80004. This will reserve your spot—it’s first come first serve.

If you want to get reservations at Admirals Cove for a motel or cabin, please call Roxanne at 308-520-3465—RIGHT AWAY!! Please leave a message saying that you are with the Salty Dogs. She will call you back within 24 hours. Rooms as of today are extremely limited!! They do have more campsites available as of today. I also have a list of hotels in Ogallala.

If you have any questions, you can call or email me at mcconaughy@saltydog.org.

A GOODBYE PARTY FOR COVID-19   —   FOURTH OF JULY PARTY, 2020

Ahoy there, Saltydoggers –

Let’s celebrate the end of this pandemic and the beginning of our great country.

Yes, we will try for the July 4th date to have a party at my house: Saturday, July 4, 5:00 pm.

Save the date and plan to come if all is secure with the virus (otherwise, I will try for a date further in time). It will be a potluck, so no prepay  is needed. I do not have a BBQ any more so you will need to bring your own portable one if you want to have a grill. (Sorry, I thought I was going to move, so gave it away) Also may need you to bring a lawn chair or two  and I may need a few other things, but I will call you. We will see the fireworks, either from my roof or up the street from me, AND play games, actually in reverse order.

Viruses don’t like warm weather or sun and we will be outdoors so we should be safer than most places.

We may even be able to shake hands or hug then.

Games? Yes, a few –   There will be PRIZES !

Cost of this event, other than your potluck dish–  ‘BYOB’ – each of you will need to bring a boat (not for keeps)

[Could be as big as Shane’s rubber raft or it could be the floaty that accompanies you in the bathtub]

More later

Miss you all. Be safe

Gari W.

August 2019 Newsletter

Denver Sailing Club August 2019 Newsletter

Greetings Salty Dogs! As a courtesy to our esteemed newsletter editor, your Commodore (Marilyn Allen) agreed to take over the newsletter preparation for August. Boy have I learned to appreciate Ira! Please forgive any confusion, conflicting fonts, etc. Fortunately, he’ll be back on the job next month! You folks have no idea how much work he does!!!

We’re officially back to meeting at Chatfield, although still in a “bring you own food and beverage” mode for our monthly meetings since there’s no restaurant yet.

IMPORTANT! The meeting and sail is AUGUST 8TH—2nd Thursday of the month.
There will be a short meeting then we go sailing, weather permitting.
Many of us just returned from a 4-day sailing adventure to Lake Mac near Ogallala
NB. The lake is almost 20 miles long with few motor boats or jet skis. Heaven!
There was fun with water toys, swimming and enjoying one another’s company.
This was a big event, because we had participation from 2 other clubs—something
your board has been working hard to achieve. Cross mingling on big events helps
us all, with ideas to share and new members. Check out the Lake Mac article and
photos on page 7.  Click on this link to read more: August2019

March 2019 Newsletter

March 4, 2019 By Ira Greenberg

Commodore’s Log                       Marilyn Allen

Blame the Commodore for the late newsletter.
I’ve been sailing in the Eastern Caribbean for the past 2 weeks and our editor
agreed to hold the presses awaiting my tardy contribution.|

As I was enjoying turquoise 4 — 6 ft seas with occasional 10 – 12 ft surprise
waves and 20+ knot winds on a 9 hour sail between Antigua and St Barths, I fear
the newsletter was not at the top of my mind !

ShaneFor those of you who missed our annual Landlubbers, you missed a fun time,
where we honored the 2018 Board and especially our 2 year Commodore, Becky
Mock. There were awards for unique behavior with fun certificates and we
honored our members who had made over the top contributions to the club during
2018. Shane Brouilette received both Coordinator of the Year for the number of
events he coordinated and the challenge he took on and conquered when he
agreed to take over the Sterling sail. He also got Broken Mast for, well, a broken mast!

Dave Salty Dog of the YearDave Westfall was well deserving of Salty Dog of the Year for his readiness to share
his boat, coordinating the Lake Mac Sail (along with Diana Bliss) and lots of
contributions to the website. Thanks to all. There are a couple more fun awards waiting to be given out, so come to the March meeting.

Your board has been busy and we’ll be presenting some new marketing ideas to
build membership as well as highlight updates to our web site. I’ll talk briefly about
our club liability insurance because there appear to have been some
misunderstandings about our coverage.

IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE A COPY OF OUR POLICY TO REVIEW, EMAIL commodore@saltydog.org AND I WILL FORWARD IT TO YOU FOR YOUR REVIEW. THIS IS AVAILABLE TO ALL MEMBERS.

Vice Commodore Blair Ohler has lined up great guest speakers, and will be
presenting the new club Vision, Mission and Goals. Like any good organization, the
club needs direction and we’re hoping the membership will be as excited about
these as your board is.

Looking forward to seeing everyone at Piccolo’s on March 14.

Marilyn Allen, Commodore

Commodore’s Log

Pueblo SailHi fellow Salty Doggers –

I’m looking at this PILE of snow in my driveway and really craving some boat and beach time. How about you? Several of our members are on sailing trips to warmer locales about now. Many of the trips have been arranged through friendships and associations formedthrough the Salty Dogs.

The January meeting was our planning meeting for 2019 sailing events. If you didn’t attend, well, I hope you like what our club has scheduled. We’ll be doing a 4-day trip to Lake Mac in Nebraska, a couple of trips to Dillon, one to Pueblo (see photo), and of course our single day trips to local lakes. We’ll be doing a little more on Cherry Creek and also more weekday events, at the request of our members. Some of the Cherry Creek and
week day events might be a little more spur of the moment, so keep your eyes open for web blasts as sailing season starts.  Diana Bliss, our On the Water Coordinator is working hard with the Board to put together a great sailing season that will appeal to all.

We also passed out a questionnaire to uncover what you, the club members, would like to see from our club during 2019. I know Blair Ohler, our able Vice Commodore is covering that in his log, but we’ll also be passing out the questionnaires at
Landlubbers. That will be your final chance to help guide the club to be what you, the member, want it to be.

Speaking of Landlubbers, get your checks and your reservations in NOW. We need to plan fun events and get numbers to the restaurant. $29 check, made out to Salty Dogs reserves your spot. Send to Marilyn Allen. The date is February 16 at 6 PM at
Piccolo’s. Deadline for checks is Feb. 10, but we’d sure like to hear from you before that.

January 2019 Newsletter

January 2, 2019 By Ira Greenberg

2019 January Newsletter

Happy 2019 everyone.

I wish you success, health, wealth and LOTS of wind in your sails! You have a great 2019 board with a solid combination of both new members and us more “seasoned” ones. We’re already initiating some changes, which will make things easier for our
volunteer board members and hopefully, give our club great exposure.

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ! IT’S IMPORTANT !

As a standard practice, our newsletter is distributed to members and also published on our public web site. Soon, it will be available in additional areas of the web as well. While your board and trip coordinators want to be fully available to our members, we don’t want our personal contact info publicized to the web world.  Historically there were 2 versions of the newsletter; now there will be one and it will not contain personal contact info for either your board members or trip coordinators.

Trips will have the coordinator’s name and a web address such as pueblo@saltydog.org or the like. To get personal contact info for your board members, you will need to refer to the club roster, which will be coming to you shortly via email. Please keep it handy.

There will be a little different procedure to get your monthly newsletter. To increase traffic numbers to our web site, members now will be emailed a link to the newsletter, which will allow the newsletter to be viewed in the web site. To get your newsletter, click on the link. Increased numbers of visitors improve our ratings and saltydog.org will come up higher when someone searches for sailing in Denver. If this makes no sense to you, I understand, but we’ve got some wonderful folks on the board that know this stuff. Inquiries from the web have resulted in many new members. Watch to see an expanded presence.

For the January meeting, I’ve suggested to our Vice Commodore and our On the Water Coordinator that we go back to the procedures of a few years back and make this a planning meeting for our upcoming sailing season. We can discuss potential locations, get volunteer coordinators and explore options. Our On The Water Coordinator, Diana Bliss, has already gotten coordinators for some of the big sails. Bring your ideas, your spirit of volunteering, and let’s lay plans to make 2019 the best sailing season ever. We’d especially appreciate your ideas for expanding our membership, especially boat owners.

My new office view is to Cherry Creek Reservoir (THINK SAIL !) and visions of sailboats are dancing in my head. Happy 2019 everyone.

Your new Commodore, Marilyn Allen

December 2018 Newsletter

December 1, 2018 By Ira Greenberg

Commodore’s Log
              Becky Mock

Ahoy, Saltydoggers! It gives me great pleasure to announce your Board of Directors for 2019:

Commodore: Marilyn Allen
Vice Commodore: Blair Ohler
Treasurer: Brooke Mooreland
Membership: Tance Walker
Secretary: Gary Kieft
Newsletter: Ira Greenberg
Webmaster: Dave Westfall
On the Water: Diana Bliss
Dryland: Andrea Lewis

Thanks to all these folks for stepping up to guide the Salty Dogs through next year. They will be taking over in January. Please watch your email for an updated copy of the financial policies. We’ve made a couple of changes. Here are those changes in a nutshell:

·   Boatowners will be receiving a per mileage disbursement for out of town trips for gas and wear and tear. This will be equivalent to the IRS standard deduction for mileage. Mileage will be determined by Google Maps with the starting point being where the boat is usually kept.

·  Also for out of town, multi-day trips, a deadline for registration and a deadline for cancellation will be published. These dates will be determined by the policies of the venue we are reserving. Cancellations prior to deadline will receive an 80% refund. After the cancellation deadline, no refund will be given. Personal emergency cases (i.e. illness, sudden injury, death in the family, etc.) will be handled on a case by case basis.

·  We increased the dues by $5.00 at every tier. We have not had a dues increase in over ten years. This is much needed to cover our increasing costs.

Here are the new 2019 rates:

            Single:

            Early:                $40        (before 12/31)

            Renewal:          $45        (1/1  –  1/31)

            New Member:  $50

            Couple:

            Early:                 $75        (before 12/31)

            Renewal:           $80        (1/1  –  1/31)

            New Member:   $90
