Volume 40 Issue 7 – July 2021

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

I just returned from our Big Mac trip this past weekend which we had three great days of sailing! We’ve had a slow start but have had some good sailing so far. We had two boats for the Lake Pueblo trip with a small group of crew. This year we had good weather for the weekend and several new members who took instructions well. This past Tues we had our first moonlight sail at Cherry Creek with three boats.

July 8th, we will be meeting at the Seagulls Restaurant down at Chatfield Marina at 5:30PM for a short meeting, then sailing at 6:30PM weather permitting.  If you are planning to sail after the meeting, call Gary Kieft 858-752-8020 so he knows how many boats to line up. This sail is not payable online, so members pay $10 at the meeting.

We have quite a line up for July events and sails coming up! Gari Westkott is hosting the July 4th Party at her house again this year. It was really fun last year with fun team games and prizes, then watching the fireworks! Men will be honored at the Men’s Day Sail on July 10th which Mark Graas is coordinating. Shane Brouilette will be coordinating another moonlight sail on July 21st. The Dillon Day Sail on Wednesday, July 28th with John Venema coordinating. Lastly, the Dillon Weekend Sail on August 13th–15th with Jim Watson coordinating. Please remember to secure your own lodging for this Dillon two-day sail. I already have my hotel reservations. The sooner the better.

Cliff is working hard to update our membership list and hopefully have it distributed by email to our current members by July 1st. So, if you haven’t renewed your membership, you still have time to get your name on the list! Also, he has been distributing the sweatshirts from the first order. They turned out very nice and if there is more interest, we could take another order of 12 sweatshirts.

Shane, On the Water Coordinator, is still looking for two more coordinators for two-day sails, one for Friday, August 20th – full moon sail at Chatfield, and the last sail on September 18th is open. Please let him know if you are willing to coordinate a day sail—no experience needed, comes with training and mentoring. It’s really not that hard. Thanks for everyone stepping up to volunteer!

Again, I want to thank our sail coordinators and boat owners who volunteer their time to keep this club running and having fun! For June, coordinators were Gary Kieft for meeting sails, Melissa Steiner for the Lake Pueblo weekend, Shane for the moonlight sail, and myself for the Big Mac weekend! Also, our boat owners were Brooke and Larry Moreland, Cliff Randall, Mark Graas, Nick and Marty Condos, Cindie and Keith Sandlin, and Brian Tophoj. Please say a word of appreciation to them when you see them!

So, hope you can attend the next member meeting July 8th at Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield Marina at 5:30 PM. Mark Graas will be leading the meeting since I’ll be hiking with my hiking group. Invite a friend to join us and check us out with a quick sail!

Also, keep in mind for the Fall, Marilyn is going to organize a scuba activity. Hopefully, we will be diving at the Aquarium in Denver!! I, for one, am going to have to spend the summer gathering up the nerve to do it. But by September/October, who knows, I may be ready!!

Pueblo Sail – Friday 6/4/21 – Sunday 6/6/21

This year we had two boats. Captains were Nick Condos and Mark Graas. Everyone arrived on Friday, June 4th. The captains and some of the crew who arrived early on Friday were able to take advantage of an additional sail on Nick’s boat and enjoy some great winds that afternoon.

Friday evening was the potluck dinner at Diana Bliss’ campground site and it was quite the feast! There was no shortage of food. Joining us was a new Salty Dogs member Marguerite Granat, who lives in Pueblo West. Marguerite also sailed both Saturday and Sunday. A big welcome to Marguerite!

Saturday’s sail brought decent winds. After it concluded, we all met later in downtown Pueblo and had dinner at the Shamrock Brewing Company.

Sunday’s winds were quite light. Nick’s boat pulled out around noon, and Mark’s boat pulled out around 2PM as a storm was approaching, so many vessels were scrambling for the launching ramp. The best winds on Sunday, as luck would have it, were when Mark’s boat was pulling out.

Big Mac Trip – Friday 6/18/21 – Sunday 6/20/21

On Friday, June 18th, we had three boats ready to sail and a few crew ready to go. We had great weather and wind. By the end of the day, we had everyone there for the cook your own dinner and some people went to the restaurant at the Cove. There was a singer performing at the Cove that night but we had our own fiddle player, Keith, playing for us! Saturday, we were out sailing early with three full boats. It started out with great winds but we knew to keep an eye on the weather as the winds were going to increase and possible storm by late afternoon. On Cliff’s boat they had a “Tilly overboard” in which Cliff lost his hat in the winds, so they did a man overboard maneuver to rescue his hat successfully! Everyone had a great long day sailing with winds 10-20mph. Cliff’s boat finally came in right before it started to rain at 5PM.  Again, on Saturday night for our pot luck dinner, it was going to rain so thankfully, Brian offered his house on the other side of the lake to have our pot luck there. We all piled into cars and brought our food dishes over to his house and had a wonderful dinner party there and saw his new house which looks out onto the lake! Sunday was even heavier winds at 8AM so we decided to pack up and leave early. Until next year where we will plan on a three-day weekend to allow for possible storms and more time for sailing.

Fourth of July Party – Sunday 7/4/21

Come one, come all, maskless, smiling, and happy to see others!!! Whoopee!!! Another Fourth of July at 5:30pm at my house, 1690 S. Deframe Ct., Lakewood 80228. BYOB and BYOM (booze and meat to grill). AND a salad to share. It could be egg salad, bean salad, potato salad, macaroni salad, tuna salad, Jell-O salad, a green salad, Greek salad, pear salad, broccoli salad, apple salad, cucumber salad, carrot salad, chicken salad, avocado salad, fruit salad, shrimp salad, tomato salad, ham salad, spinach salad, German potato salad, deviled egg salad. A prize will be given for the best salad  – voted on by the U.S. electoral college. Anyone who really wants to bake a cake, call me.

You will again be divided into teams that will compete. For what? Haven’t decided yet, but this time I guarantee you will not need to take off any of your clothes. Also, everyone is to come with a great joke or little story to tell us in the wee hour of the evening until the fireworks begin. Be prepared to dance to some awesome Iranian music.

If you have a folding chair, it would be good to bring one. Some of you went up to the street above my house and watched the fireworks display from up there; some of you sat on the roof of my house to do the same – your choice. Let’s issue in a new year of no Covid. My assumption is that you have all had the shot if you wanted one. And if you didn’t get one, it was because you didn’t want one.

You may invite a friend or two. I just need to know the final number coming.

June 2021 Newsletter

June 1, 2021 By Larry Moreland

Volume 40 Issue 6 – June 2021

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

I just came back from Estes Park and there’s still snow in the mountains, but warmer down here to start the sailing season! We had a good turnout of 16 people for our first in-person meeting with two renewals, two new members, and sailing!! Things are starting to open back up. June’s meeting will again be down at Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield Thursday, June 10th, at 5:30PM dinner/short meeting with sailing at 6:30 PM. They will have a fuller dinner menu. There’s no need to try to sign up for the meeting day sailing online, just come to the member meeting and sign up with payment that night. Bring a friend to check out the club!

We had two weekend trips open up, one to Lake Pueblo, and one to Big Mac. I think at this writing there is one more spot open for the Lake Pueblo June 4th-6th and maybe Big Mac. Ladies Day sail had to be cancelled because of high winds but we did get to socialize on the Moreland’s boat to eat our lunch and munch on other goodies. There’s another June moonlight sail coming up June 22nd. You can sign up at the June meeting. See following newsletter announcement about this sail.

Also coming up in July 28th, we will have a day sail at Dillon Lake, see write up in newsletter and sign ups at meeting. We are honoring the men on Men’s Day sail on Sunday, July 8th. See the article in this newsletter. So, lots of sailing coming up. If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to rejoin the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted which is coming out soon. Membership forms are on the website and you can pay there too. Any questions, ask Cliff or any board member about membership. Invite a friend to our in-person meetings. I want to thank the SD members for stepping up to coordinate a day sail and weekend sails. For May, let’s say thanks to Gary K for the meeting sail, and Mark G for the Ladies Day sail. And also thank the boat owners for offering their boats— Morelands, Cindie S., Nick C., Dave W. and Marilyn A. There’s still open spots for day sail coordinators later this summer. We couldn’t have this club without our volunteer coordinators!

Salty Dog Sailing Club Board Update Under Financial Guidelines and Policies

This is a simple way to make up for cancelled sails. Members and guests get credit for a cancelled sail or have the option of a refund. Then, boat owners can offer their boats for a makeup sail. The boat owner can look at their schedule and the weather forecast and offer their boat for a short notice pop-up sail. The treasurer would track the credits from the missed sails. Emails would go out to members with credits when a pop-up sail is available. The boat owner would be in direct contact with the guests to coordinate the sail. This would only be available for cancelled sails to paid members or guests.

Wearing masks is at the discretion of the boat owner but masks should be worn around the dock area. Sign-ups will open up at the June 10th member meeting.

Sunday, 5/23/21, was our Ladies Day Sail that was a high wind/no sail day. The Captains decided not to go out with gusts to 40 knots. Good call! In true form of the Salty Dogs, we all sat on Larry and Brooke Moreland’s boat and had a beautiful sunny lunch and camaraderie.

Volume 40 Issue 5 – May 2021

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

True is the saying April showers (and snow) brings May flowers and sailing!! The Salty Dogs will be having their first in-person meeting on May 13th at 5:30pm down in the Seagulls Restaurant at the Chatfield Marina. You can buy a quick dinner of sandwiches or hamburgers from their snack bar but this summer they will be open with a full menu. After a short meeting with sailing announcements and sign ups, we will head out to go sailing.

We also have several day sails and weekend sails opening up for sign-ups. To honor our lady members, who sail for free, on Sunday, May 23rd, we will be having the Ladies Day sail at Chatfield starting at 11am for lunch. Sign-ups will open up at the May 13th meeting. Thanks to Mel for jumping in to coordinate our first weekend sailing event, June 4th-6th at Lake Pueblo. Also sign-ups will be open for the Big Mac trip, June 18th-20th. This is the third year to be hosted at Admiral’s Cove. See the sailing announcements in this newsletter.

If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season. Membership forms are on the website https://www.saltydog.org/membership/ and you can pay there too. Any questions, ask Cliff or any board member about membership. Invite a friend to our in-person meeting.

Thanks go out to Andrea for setting up the mini golf. We had 8 people join in and come for appetizers and drinks afterwards. It was a nice warm day and good to socialize with people. I’m writing this before our annual Boat Ready day on April 24th, but I want to thank Dave for organizing this important day to get our boats ready.

Hope to see all your smiling faces at the Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield on May 13th, meeting at 5:30pm with sailing at 6:30pm! The Zoom meeting link will be sent out about a week before the meeting, so be looking for it.

Andrea Lewis – Dry Land Coordinator:

After a winter of hiding away, eight of us bravely journeyed through history while playing miniature golf at the Colorado Journey. Great fun had by all – and a couple of “holes in one” by Dave Westfall and Marilyn Allen. We finished off the afternoon at the “Pint Room” for some well-deserved refreshments.

July 4th party – Gari Westkott has graciously offered to host a party at her house again. Those that went last year will know that it will be a fun-filled afternoon with games and BBQ!! Will keep you posted on the details.

Gari is also arranging a bike ride around Chatfield lake prior to one of the sails this summer – stay tuned!!

Any other suggestions for dry land activities, please let me know     dryland@saltydog.org

Big Mac Trip – Friday 6/18/21 – Sunday 6/20/21

The Salty Dogs will be going to Lake McConaughy from June 18th-20th. We will be staying at Admiral’s Cove again this year. You must register for this trip as there are limited spots on the boats. We have three boats this year so far with eight crew spots available. I’ll be looking for another boat so we can take more people. Your check will reserve your spot on this trip. The price of this trip is only the price to bring the boats up. YOU are responsible for getting your own reservation for lodging! The price does include a pot-luck dinner on Saturday night.

The price of the trip from July 18th-20th is $163.00 for club members and $245 for guests. This is based on the current three boats signed up. If we get a fourth boat, the cost may be reduced with a refund for the difference. Please mail your check (payable to Salty Dogs) to Diana Bliss.  This will reserve your spot—it’s first-come/first-serve. If you pay online, please email me that you signed up and paid.

If you want to get reservations at Admirals Cove for a motel or cabin, please call 308-355-2102. Please leave a message saying that you are with the Salty Dogs. Rooms may be limited!! I also have a list of hotels in Ogallala. If Admiral’s Cove doesn’t have any rooms left, here are the two closest lodging:

Boat Ready Day – 4/24/21

The first Salty Dog Boat Ready Day was a huge success yesterday!! And YES, before you ask, you can have FUN washing and working on BOAT

Mark’s Boat is Snowed In!

S to get them ready to SAIL! Seeing everybody again was the best part, plus having the donuts, Subway sandwiches, chips, fruit, and cookies, followed by Happy Hour at the Breckenridge Brewery didn’t hurt!! Sadly a couple of the scheduled boats were still snowed in, or up on blocks with a blown pickup engine…

As shown in the Pictures, the 16 attendees did have FUN along with four potential New Members.

Members attending: Gari, Marilyn, Diana, Dave, Bob, Ronni, Larry, Brooke, Ken, Nick, Marty, Mark.

Volunteers: Thanks again to Cathleen, Peg, Janice and Royce for volunteering and for all your help! Three of the new Volunteers found our Boat Ready Day on the website because of our good SEO and on the Meetup Group

April 2021 Newsletter

April 1, 2021 By Larry Moreland

Volume 40 Issue 4 – April 2021

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

Well, we finally got our big snowstorm and it looks like March may be going out like a lion. But I’m hopeful that April will be warming up and people will be gathering more. We do have a couple of happenings coming up in April. Marilyn will be leading off with the first day sail on April 17th. Details will be coming in this newsletter and at the member’s meeting. It will be great to be heading out on the water soon!

There will be a few changes to the sailing schedule to pay attention to. Ladies Day will be moved to May 23rd to make room for the Boat Wash and Boat Ready Day to be on April 24th. Watch the news as Dave Westfall will be heading this day up with hopefully a short sail afterwards. Andrea is setting up a social gathering for April 10th to kick off the season and to get re-connected!! It will be great to see people in person again. Another change to the sailing schedule is the Big Mac trip needed to be moved from June 4th-6th to NEW Dates of June 18th-20th. This was due to a fishing derby which was planned at Big Mac the first weekend in June. Last year with low water levels and the fishing derby, launching boats from one boat ramp at the dam was slow and crowded. Water levels are at 73% full so far. Mark your calendars and information will hopefully be coming out in mid-April to early May for price of trip and sign ups.

I’m looking into having the May meeting down at Chatfield Marina either outdoors or in the marina restaurant. Plans are in the works, so get ready for sailing with us soon!!!

Since we are starting sailing in April, you might want to get your sweatshirt order into Cliff as soon as possible to be in the first batch ordered. He needs only four more orders for the first batch. Thanks goes out to Brooke for the State Parks Pass orders at a discounted price. I got mine ready to turn in my voucher when my pass expires. If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season. Membership forms are on the website and you can pay there too. Any questions, ask Cliff or any board member about membership. Invite a friend to our Zoom meetings to check us out. This month’s program will be hosted by Gary Kieft covering the topic of “Man Overboard”. It’s always good to know safety first. Lastly, the April membership meeting will be Thursday April 8th at 6:30 PM. The Zoom meeting link will be sent out about a week before the meeting, so be looking for it.

Next Upcoming Event – Club Meeting April 8th, 6:30pm

We currently have orders for eight hoodies, minimum order is 12. If you would like to order one, assorted colors can be seen at Gildan.com, search hooded sweatshirt 18500. You can pick any color but the ink for logo on back of sweatshirt will be either white or dark blue. Andrea Lewis – Dry Land Coordinator:

Come join us on Saturday 10th April at 3pm – Address: 5150 Windermere St, Littleton CO 80120

Colorado Journey Miniature Golf is fun for all ages. Two, 18-hole courses feature some of Colorado’s most famous attractions. Putt your way through the wonders of Mesa Verde, hike along the Conestoga Pass, and experience the Florissant Fossil Beds. Natural elements like native flora, rock formations, streams and ponds engage your senses and add to the experience. Recent recognition in Westword’s 2018 Best of Denver awards as “Best Miniature Golf for Newbies” puts Colorado Journey at the top of their game.

We may add an impromptu dinner if people are comfortable. Please let me know if you are coming so I can ensure we have enough groups and feel free to call, text or email with any questions. dryland@saltydog.org

April Presentation – Man Overboard – 4/8/21 6:30pm

Thanks to Vice-Commodore Mark’s proposal and his requisite prodding of Gary, at some time during the meeting you will be able to follow along my presentation on the good ol’ topic of “Man Overboard!!!!”  Gary hopes to find more things we haven’t heard a dozen times prior that will keep you entertained, and help you, or someone else, get back on board!

In my internet research I read that “It’s all too easy to discuss man overboard theory and practice”, so I will evaluate the various and opposing methods and opinions out there and find some novel facets to present to you hungry nautical pupils!     – See you there, Bowman Gary

First Salty Dog Sail – 4/17/21 11:30am

JOIN US for the First Salty Dog sail of the Season! It’s scheduled for Saturday, April 17 at Chatfield.

We’ll meet at the picnic tables on the dock right next to Seagull’s restaurant at 11:30 and be on the water by about 12:30. Plan to sail for 3-4 hours at the Captain’s discretion. Once we have enough paid reservations to cover donations to boat owners, I’ll determine if we have enough money left over to provide snacks or if I’ll ask participants to bring some munchies to share. Be sure to bring your own non-alcoholic beverage for before and during the sail and anything else you might want to partake in once we’re at the dock. Club policy states no alcoholic beverages until we’re all safely at the dock with the same number of participants we left with! Remember, as a Salty Dog crew member, you’re expected to help rig and de-rig the boat and participate in the sailing itself. If you’re new to the sport, more experienced members will be happy to help you get acquainted with sailing.

Plan to dress in layers with a warm, waterproof jacket and possibly a warm hat or neck gator. Be sure to bring sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, non-marking shoes and your own water.  Sailing gloves (or gardening gloves) are nice to have when pulling lines. Masks will be required while we’re gathering on the dock and may be required on the boat at the Captain’s discretion. To maintain social distancing, we’ll be limiting the number of passengers.

We have two Why Buy boats committed and would love an owner boat or two. Boat owners, let me know if you might be available.

Cost is $15 for members and guests pay $22.50 (1.5% of the member cost). Your online payment will be your reservation. Link to pay is: https://www.saltydog.org/shop/. In addition to paying on-line, please email me at homesbyma@gmail.com to let me know you’ll be attending so I can balance the number of boats to crew. Since this is an early season sail, I expect we’ll have a limited number of boats available, so the sail will fill up fast. Sign up soon and we’ll see you on the water!

Boat Ready Day – 4/24/21 10:00am-3:00pm

The First Boat Ready Day (formerly Boat Wash) has been scheduled for Saturday, April 24th from 10am-3pm at Chatfield. We’ll meet at the Picnic Shelter south of the Marina Restrooms. This is a work day for Volunteers to help the Boat Owners get our “Fleet” ready for the 2021 Sailing Season. Yes, we’ll be washing the boats, but there are many other things that our Captains need help with like: removing tarps, raising masts, rigging sails, cleaning cabins, repairing fiberglass, installing batteries, gassing up, starting engines, installing electronics, etc. So, if you are interested in donating your time to show appreciation for our Boat Owners, then wear your work clothes, bring your masks, and something to drink.  The Club will provide sandwiches and chips. The Marina store should also be open for drinks by then.  Progress permitting, there may also be some short check out sails later in the day.  To volunteer or to bring your boat, email me at dave@davewestfall.com.

Cindie Sandlin – Member

Ahoy! I will be racing with CSYC this year on Wednesday evenings and am looking for ladies who are interested in crewing. Ideally, I will have two permanent crew members and a list of substitutes that can fill in or just join us once a month. There will be calendar for those who only want to come out occasionally.  Please let me know if you are interested. You can call/text me at 303-909-0354. Racing starts April 21st.

March 2021 Newsletter

March 8, 2021 By Larry Moreland

Volume 40 Issue 3 – March 2021

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

I want to thank Marilyn and Bobby for putting on the Landlubbers Celebration virtually last month. We had a lot of good, funny stories which earned awards. Here’s a summary of the awards given: Broken Mast award—Bob Brand; Coordinator of the Year—Diana Bliss; SD of the Year—Ronnie Wilcox; New member of the Year—Mark Graas. The following were recognitions of sailing happenings this year: Hick and Looper—Charles Igel; Unflappable Captain—Cliff Randall; Mr. Enthusiasm—Gary Kieft; Soggy Dog— Mike Mason; Dancing Latvian—Zeke  Zebauer; Near Collision with Navy Subs—Peter Baumgardner and Molly Miller. I also want to thank the past Commodore, Marilyn Allen, and the Board for all the work to keep the sailing club afloat!!

It looks like March will be coming in warmer than usual, so maybe that means that warmer weather is just around the corner. With our Covid numbers going down, people getting their vaccines, and the county changing easing restrictions, operations of the sailing season and meetings may be looking up. I’m still hoping by May we will be able to meet somewhere in person. If you know of a restaurant with an outdoor porch area, please let Mark or myself know ahead of time so we can check it out.

Also we have a full sailing schedule coming up. What the club needs are volunteers to be sailing coordinators for each sail day or trip. We will be having a coordinators meeting in late April to train you with all the procedures and policies. It’s really not hard for a day sail and, if you are new, we can mentor you in the process. Let Shane know that you are interested in helping out the club.

If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season. Membership forms are on the website and you can pay there, too. Cliff will be taking orders for new hoody sweatshirts during March so look for details in this newsletter. Any questions, ask Cliff.

This month’s Program will be about Rough Weather and how to recognize it before it hits you.

Cliff Randall – Membership Report

We are currently at 26 members, not many people think of sailing in Colorado in February. I have had success with the Nextdoor website by starting a Sailing in Colorado group in attracting new members. I will reach out to those interested people when the weather warms a little more.

We are  looking into ordering hoodies with the Salty Dog logo, there is a 12 unit minimum order, price is expected to be around $30.00 each, assorted colors can be seen at Gildan.com, search hooded sweatshirt 18500. You can pick any color but the ink for logo on back of sweatshirt will be either white or dark blue. Please contact me at Cliffrandall@hotmail.com. I will need your size, color of sweatshirt, ink color for logo, and your payment of $30.00 payable to Salty Dogs. Please mail payment to Cliff Randall at 7835 Nelson St, Arvada 80005.

Andrew Lewis – Dry Land Coordinator:

We do not have anything planned for March at the moment. If it looks like we are going to get a nice weekend in a couple of weeks – I will send out an email b

last and we can do the putt-putt as a “short notice event”. If anyone has any other ideas for a dryland activity, please email me at dryland@saltydog.org

Hope everyone is keeping safe and well. Hope to see you all soon!

Shane Brouillette – On the Water Coordinator:

So, here’s the deal. If you’re a member that’s willing to coordinate a sail this season, please check the sailing schedule in this newsletter and on the far-right column you will see several question marks.  Those are sail events that I need to find members to make those sails happen. So…if you see one that you’re willing to take under your wing, please contact me and I’ll answer any questions you might have and hopefully assign you to that sail.   shanebrulet@gmail.com

Tiffany Jordan – Newsletter:

Apologies for the lateness of this month’s issue. I moved to sunny Florida and have been getting settled. I landed in Fort Pierce so if anyone is ever sailing out this way, please let me know!

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year 2021

I’m certainly looking forward to a new year with the vaccines coming out and the hope that things start to get back to near normal. I hope everyone had a safe and healthy holiday. I’m really looking forward to a new sailing season, and hopefully having in person meetings with dining, maybe by May. I’m excited to welcome the new board and look forward to working together for a successful and fun-filled year.

Looking ahead we will be looking for a new meeting place for in person meetings when that becomes safely possible.  I was thinking possibly in the Littleton or Englewood area. If anyone has any suggestions for a place, please let me know.

Another item is that we are in need of a new Quartermaster. Beppe will be stepping down. We need someone with some storage space, a big garage, or basement for plastic boxes which hold our paper products, supplies, and canopy for the club trips. Let someone on the board know if you can help.

Our first meeting of the year will be Thurs Jan 14th at 6:30PM on Zoom. Look for your invite by email coming up. The main event will be going over the new sailing schedule and filling in any holes. Shane has a tentative outline of the sailing schedule in this newsletter. There are a few multi-day weekend trips like Big Mac, and Dillon, but if you have another lake you would like to visit, we still have room in the schedule. Then we will fill in with other local day sails. However, all of this is dependent on having members volunteer to coordinate these sails to make them happen. So please step up and get involved with your club!!

Mark, the Vice Commodore, has reported that he has some exciting speakers lined up for upcoming meetings for the new year. For the January meeting we may have a surprise game to play over Zoom, so tune in to our Zoom meeting on Thurs Jan 14th at 6:30PM.

See you all then!

Diana

The Christmas Party was a little less raucous than previous years … but for a zoom party – was very fun!!

We had the traditional Christmas quiz with some untraditional questions i.e. – what is the most common Christmas dinner in Japan? Answer – KFC chicken (of all things). And then we heard different people’s favorite Christmas memories/stories. It was lovely to hear the stories, but most important how respectful everyone was of keeping each story less than three minutes and others not interrupting. What a well-behaved herd of Salty Dogs we have! Finished the party with a rendition of Jingle Bells led by Mark, with Tiffany jingling her wine glass!! Lots of fun and memories made. And I promise there will be a “pass the parcel game” at next year’s party!!

I have nothing planned for January at this time. However, if anyone wants to try and play games on the internet, I would be open to it. We use an app called “Houseparty” to keep our family connected. Please let me know if anyone is interested in trying to connect through that.

When the weather is a little better and more predictable, I was thinking we could play putt-putt golf at Cornerstone Park in Littleton on a Sunday afternoon sometime. And we can revisit the bowling idea when we feel inside events are a little safer.

If anyone has any ideas as to how to keep our group connected in the off-season, please let me know.

-Andrea

Next Upcoming Event – Zoom Meeting Thursday Jan 14th, 6:30pm

In Memoriam of Bob Johnson

– Remembered by John Venema

Bob Johnson, a charter member of the Salty Dog Sailing Club, passed away December 17, 2020 at the age of 90. Our sympathy to his wife Lynda Coy.

Bob contributed many years of service to our club, including serving as editor of the newsletter.  He published a basic sailing instruction manual which he titled “Chapman Lite”.  Bob shared his boat, which he built himself, at many of the club sailing events.

Always a patient and “Unflappable Captain”, we will miss his generous and pleasant nature.

– Remembered by Shane Brouillette

I had a sailing buddy for several years named Bob Johnson. He passed away recently at age 90. He and Linda were longtime Salty Dog members, and he had a 14-foot wooden boat that he had built from plans.

We sailed many times each year in it and he used it at club day sails as well. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body and was liked by a wide circle of friends, many of them still in the Salty Dogs club. I never saw him looking unhappy. I miss him already. Here is a picture of him at a club sail showing how to right a capsized boat.
