Assumed duties from April to October, because the elected person had to step down due to family issues. I led SDSC meetings, contacted board members about upcoming newsletter articles, assisted and coordinated various sails, investigated another winter meeting place to start in Sept, and general coordination of all Salty Dog activities, events, and sailing coordinators.

Melissa Stiener – Treasurer

2023 Annual Report

Club’s 2023 financials beginning 12/01/2022 (my first day as Treasurer) through 11/08/23. The Profit & Loss report does not break down our Sailing Events with the detail on each sail – it only shows the total by category (i.e. Day sails, Meeting sails, and Multi-day), so I have attached a supplemental report “Sales by Item,” which is a detailed listing of all the Club’s income-generating events.

The Profit & Loss report I received from Brooke for calendar year 2022 included data from 1/01/22 through 11/30/22 (Brooke’s last day as Treasurer). It showed a profit of $376.69.

Other info:

  • Our checking account balance as of today is $2899.91.
  • $2200 will disappear in March 2024 when our insurance policy is renewed.
  • The current balance does not reflect any 2024 renewal dues payments, with the exception of 1 single’s early renewal payment I received at our October monthly meeting.

NO MORE VOUCHERS WILL BE GIVEN

If a sail is cancelled for whatever reason, the participants who have already paid will receive a check from SDSC treasurer. Thank you for your cooperation.

Ron Vasquez – Membership Coordinator

2023 Annual Report

We ended up with a membership of 58, down 2 from last year.  I kept a roster with 3 different categories:  a general membership list of names, addresses and other contact information, a list of boat owners with information about their boats, and a list of each member’s emergency contact info in case of accidents while boating.  Those later 2 lists should be given to the On the Water chairman, so they can be made available to the various outing coordinators.  The first list, with its updates, needs to go to the Newsletter (Dog Tales) editor.  The Webmaster had set it up that I got a copy of all payments made through the website which made it easy for me to know when people’s dues were paid online.  I contacted all new members as well as a few people whom other members referred to me for possible membership.  As in previous years, we’re offering a $5 per person discount for those who pay their 2024 dues before the new year.

Please remember to renew your membership.

Application forms and credit card payments can be found on www.saltydog.org.  The application needs to be filled out completely with signatures on BOTH pages. Contact Ron at Membership@saltydog.org before the end of the year.

Reminder about Early Renewal dues for 2024 (deadline=12/31) to receive a Couple’s discount of $10 ($85 vs $95) and a Single’s discount of $5 ($50 vs $55).

Diana Bliss – On the water Coordinator

2023 Annual Report

Even though we only had five Denver boat owners, we still managed to run 10-day sails and three weekend sails. We had to two canceled sails one cause July 1st was close to holiday, and scavenger hunt had only two crew. I think adding Granby weekend sail to the schedule was exciting and something new for members.   A couple of sails needed to be re-scheduled because of bad weather. Because we only had five Denver boat owners, I changed the duties of the On the Water coordinator to be responsible for getting the boats for sails lined up way ahead of time. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to boat owners—Cindie Sandlin, Micheal Smith, Mike Cranna, Bob Brand, Cliff Randal, Brooke and Larry Moreland, Zeke Zebauer, and Jim Watson.

The Salty Dog Sailing Club, Inc. is a Colorado nonprofit organization composed of couples and singles interested in sailing and socializing with others who share their love for the sport. Boat owners and non-owners are welcome!

The Club plans about a dozen sails each season, including day and weekend sails at nearby lakes. Special three-day holiday trips often include Lake Granby or Pueblo Reservoir in Colorado, Lake McConaughy in Nebraska, or Glendo Reservoir in Wyoming.

Salty Dog members have also organized charter sails in the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Greece, and France.  Aside from sailing, we have a variety of fun dry land activities throughout the year.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month, except for November, and December when there are banquets and special parties. Beginning in May, regular club meetings resume at the Chatfield Marina. Rendezvous at the Seagull (Chatfield Marina) Restaurant around 17:30 – 18:00 for socializing with other members and to order dinner. New Vouchers

Because of the situation of so many people signing up for the new member sail on June 25th and a few sign-up issues, a number of vouchers will be sent to new Members who paid ahead of time and could not get on a boat. When you get this voucher by email from the treasurer, you will have to print it out and when you want to sign up for another sail (equally priced sail) and use that voucher, you will have to call the coordinator of that sail to get signed up. You can either send the coordinator a photo or scan of the voucher, or hand it to them at a meeting. But remember you are not signed up until the date you show proof of the voucher.  Handing out vouchers will not be the normal routine. Also, the voucher may NOT be applied toward any multi-day sail. You will need to sign up and pay online ahead of the deadline or early so you’ll get a spot. Since we have limited boats in the Denver area, and a lot of people who want to go sailing, it’s always been first come (date of payment) first served.

October 2023 Newsletter

November 9, 2023 By Jeremy Frett

Volume 42 Issue 10 – October 2023

Diana Bliss – Interim Commodore

Commodore’s Log

As I write this article the last day of summer is waning and the first day of fall is coming soon! I was recently up at Estes Park and the leaves were just barely starting to turn. But that doesn’t end the sailing season! We still have our last sail on the Harvest Moon on Sept. 30th at Chatfield and there might be an opportunity if boat owners want to go out in October to sail. So, watch for email blasts about October sails! Our October member meeting on Thursday, October 12th will be held at IHOP in Belmar, 389 S. Wadsworth Blvd, at 18:00.  Cliff will be presenting his adventures in Rhode Island.

Recapping the end of sailing season, we had three sunny days of sailing on Lake Dillon and tried a New Mexican restaurant which treated us to a free after dinner drink! Also, the last Saturday potluck dinner was held at Jim Watson’s before his closing. Everyone had a good time! Thanks, Jim, for all the enjoyable years hosting this dinner.  Another Sailgrass dinner and music was hosted by the CSYC and joined by 10 salty dogs on three boats.

Looking ahead we have a dryland event, Octoberfest, Friday September 27th, at a real German restaurant, our annual Christmas party, Dec 14th with live music (details coming up), and, elections of officers, November 9th, which helps keep the club alive!

This is our official announcement of our Annual Meeting in November 9th at 6 PM for the election of officers for the 2024 sailing season. Listed below are the articles from our by-laws which describe each office position and their duties. Please take a look at this and see if you would fit into one of these positions. It’s a great way to give back to the club or if new to get involved with the club and meet new people. I know I’ve talked to some of the members but let me know if you are interested in any of these positions. If you can’t make the annual meeting and would like to vote by absentee ballot, please contact me and I’ll send you one by email before the meeting. Absentee ballots are due back to me by Monday, October 30th. Any questions, please contact me by email or call 303-424-7841.

Sailing northern waters

a short trip to Lake Superior and Apostle Islands territory

By Marilyn Allen

In mid-September, I traveled to Bayfield WI to participate in two sailing classes on Lake Superior – one for the ASA 104 (Bareboat Chartering) and the other for the ASA 114 (Sailing Catamarans).  It was quite a challenge for my body and mind…. As I recall, the last time I took a written test was in college and that was “a couple” of years ago!    I flew into MSP, then had a 5-hour drive north through beautiful countryside to reach Bayfield.  Lots of farms, white clapboard houses on huge green lots, lots of trees with a few trees changing color and lakes everywhere~    It was a very enjoyable drive and I’d allocated time to enjoy it.  I arrived early evening at Pike Bay Marina which is one of the largest in the area with over 200 slip spaces and a luxurious clubhouse facility with PRIVATE SHOWERS, full kitchen, fresh coffee in the morning and even washers and dryers – all available to slip owners and guests.

I never thought I’d be sailing in ski clothes, but they felt pretty good.  The Apostle Island area is gorgeous and well worth a trip – beautiful scenery and very friendly people.  I’ll be going back!

Nighttime temperatures are crisp and on my first night sleeping on the Cat the inside temperature was about 56 degrees.  Only the end of my nose was sticking out of my down sleeping bag!  Then we had two days of classes on a 38 ft monohull with 10-20 kt winds and basically sunny cool weather.   We learned a LOT about diesel engines, docking, some navigation and charting, safety, and the operation of radio, using emergency equipment and then preparing for a charter and more. I learned a lot and even though I’ve participated in charters before there was a lot more to learn and our instructor, Rick, was very patient.   Also, test-taking is long in my past and the 104 caused me to sweat a bit although at least I passed…just not the way I would have liked to.

The next 2 days were sailing on the Catamaran.  By then I’d found the boat heater.  Docking with two engines is both fun and challenging as we learned to spin the boat (slowly) 180 degrees while moving forward or backward very little.  Steering a course is different because the line to follow is several feet to one side or the other of the bow, depending on where the helm is.  Cats are very different to turn with minimal adjustment to the main sheet and lots of work with the jib.

Compared to the newbies I knew quite a bit already but learning everything I need to know to captain a charter boat leaves a lot of gaps which are going to be worked on during the winter.  It’s a LOT of work and responsibility and I’ve got a lot more to learn.   My hat’s off to the wonderful folks who have invited me along on your trips.  I never fully appreciated you and if invited along again, I can assure you that I’ll be a much better crew person and who knows?  Maybe even more!

Salty Dog Cancellation policy

Here is our cancellation policy, as per our financial guidelines:

All persons attending a sailing event are expected to pay the full amount of the trip donation prior to departure. The cancellation deadline for multi-day events will be determined by venue. Participants cancelling prior to the deadline will be charged a 20% cancellation fee and refunded 80% of the deposit.  Cancellation after the deadline will lose their deposit, except in the case of hardship. Cancellations must be dated, in writing and received by coordinator either e-mail, text or letter prior to deadline. For day sails, no refund will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to the event.

I can’t believe that the summer is more than half over!! We still have more great sails coming up! I’m packing up for the Granby trip as I write this article. Granby is one of my favorite lakes to sail in Colorado, next to Dillon. Our next member meeting sail is August 10th, meeting at the Seagulls restaurant at Chatfield at 17:30 for dinner and quick meeting, then going out for an evening sail at 18:30. Register online $10 for members and $15 for guests.  Coming up next is the August 20th Scavenger Hunt at Chatfield. This will be a fun event and the third year running. See the article in this newsletter and register online. Also, to finish the month we have a Super Moonlight sail on August 25th, Friday, so see the article in this newsletter for details and times. Pay online to register. Of course, for Labor Day Weekend we are returning to Dillon from Sept 1st—3rd, Friday to Sunday for our last big weekend trip! See article for details and sign up online. You need to specify each day you want to sail for the online registration. Lastly, on Sept. 10th, Sunday, we have the Sailgrass sail with the CSYC club. They will be providing a Cajun style shrimp boil and bluegrass music for a separate charge to be paid to CSYC $15. If we can get enough boats for an afternoon sail for our members, we will have a reduced price of $15 for members and $22 for guests, to be paid on our website. It’s a great time so see the article in the newsletter.

Our last scheduled sail is the Full Harvest Moon sail on Sept 24th, or it might be changed to 23rd day sail. I don’t have a coordinator for that sail yet. So, it might be their choice and we NEED boats for that sail to go. Please let me know if you are interested in coordinating this sail in which you get to sail FREE! I will provide training and mentoring to get you through it. It’s not that hard and you will be helping the club out.

Lake Granby Sailing

July 28th—30th, 2023

The Salty Dogs are finally going back to Lake Granby but NOT on the fourth of July weekend!  We will have a potluck dinner on Friday night where you bring a side dish to share, and the club will provide an entrée and paper products. Saturday night we will go out to eat in Grand Lake, probably at the Sage Brush.  Hopefully we will get two or three days of sailing, depending on the weather and when people come. We are staying in the Stillwater campground. We have some sites in Loop C —#95, #104, #105, & #107. If you would like to join us, please go to the website www.recreation.gov under “Stillwater, Co” and reserve your campsite somewhere in the campground, if there’s openings. Campsite #107 is reserved for Bob and Ronni who have the trailer and cook site. Campsite # 105 is reserved for Diana but can share it with a tent person. Probably #107 will be our gathering place for Friday dinner. I will be sending out a list of possible hotels in the area, but you might want to go ahead and do a search for “hotels near Stillwater Campground” or you could contact this private campground nearby called Elk Creek Camp and RV Park at 970-627-8502. Let me know where you will be staying. This year we have one sailboat, one motorboat, one pontoon. My friend Kathy Z. has the motorboat up there and she can bring people water skiing, or pulling on a big floating coach, or just riding around the lake. If you are a boat owner and would like to bring your boat, please contact Diana ahead of time. The cost of the trip will be $70 for members and $105 for guests. Please pay online as soon as possible since there are limited spots. Your payment is your reservation for the trip!!

August 10th, Thursday Meeting Sail

Ahoy there…

Please sign up for the August 10th Sail online to claim your seat in a boat. It will strictly be in order of sign-up date.

The sail will commence straight after the monthly meeting at Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield marina.

$10 for members and $15 for guests.

Boat Owners – please let me know if you are willing to share your boat with us that evening.

Thanks

Scavenger Hunt Sail on August 20th-Sunday

Come join us for the third Scavenger Hunt sail and bring your picnic lunch and sailing gear. We will be meeting at the picnic tables in front of the marina office for lunch at 11:00 and sail at 12 noon—one of the tables will be where we can sign up for boats. This will be a special boating event in which each boat will be doing a scavenger hunt. You will be given a list of items to look for while you are sailing and then get close enough to take a picture of it. The boat who gets the most items recorded on your one crew’s phone camera will get a prize at the end of the sail! It will make the sail a little more interesting!! We will have Happy Hour drinks to celebrate.

The cost is $20 members, and $30 for guests. To sign up and pay, you can go online to pay at saltydog.org or sign up at the August 10th member meeting.

Andrea Lewis is the coordinator and you can contact her by email alewis@remax.net or call 303-881-7376 with any questions.

Super Moon Sail

Friday, Aug 25th Chatfield

This should be an exciting and fun evening sailing.  We will meet at the Marina at 5:00pm for dinner on the dock and sail after that until the wolves start howling at the moon.  Full Moon Sailing is very majestic and puts a different perspective on gliding through the water.  Bring your cool weather gear and flashlight or head lamp.

Pay online at:  www.saltydog.org – Go to the Shop tab.

TIME: Meet at 17:30 – set sail about 18:15.

LOCATION:  Chatfield outside of Seagulls restaurant at the tables.  We’ll assign boats and there will be time for a pre-sail dinner – either bring your own or purchase it from the restaurant.

COST:  $20 members, $30 guests.  Your payment secures your reservation. Each boat captain will indicate the approximate time they will be returning to the dock.

Please call or text me at 303-909-0354, or email at newsletter@saltydog.org

ANNUAL DILLON LABOR DAY WEEKEND EVENT

SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD

Attend 1, 2 or 3 days (less availability on Sunday)

Cost is $20/day for members, $30/day for guests

Please pay on-line at www.saltydog.org

Your payment confirms your reservation.  We may have a waitlist.

To try to avoid the weekend traffic we’ll be sailing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so those with flexible time schedules can possibly avoid the long weekend rush.  Meeting time each morning will be 10:15 and we usually sail until late afternoon – weather permitting.  More details will be sent out to participants.  On Sunday, the folks who reserve multiple days will have preference over the day sailors, but we’ll try to accommodate everyone.

All meals are on your own, however we are hoping to schedule a potluck on Saturday night, and we will probably go out to dinner Friday night as a group.    If you are renting a condo that could possibly accommodate the group or are staying at the Quality Inn, which has a conference room for guests, please let the coordinator know. We may need a location for the potluck.

Lodging info from Marilyn (I’ve done this event for several years).  If you’re staying 3 or more nights, it can be cost effective to get a condo.  I like VRBO but don’t get lured in by a low price/night.  Check the total price because there are lots of additional fees.  There are also some small apartments for rent in Dillon/Wildernest.   LOTS of less expensive places are available in Keystone if you don’t mind the drive. Be sure to check Silverthorne and Frisco, too.  Snowshoe motel is fairly inexpensive and close to the Frisco Marina.  These are NOT luxurious places, but I’ve found them to be adequate and clean, but make your reservations NOW.  I’ve often found free cancellation options.

Questions?  Email Marilyn at homesbyma@gmail.com.  Subject: Dillon Sail.

This is a fun event that fills up fast.  Dillon has some of the best and most challenging sailing in our area and never boring – occasionally terrifying!  It will test you!

Dinner and live music will be $15, you can’t beat that for a fun night out at the lake with fellow sailors, family, and friends.

If you are interested in the Sailgrass – “Shrimp and Bluegrass” event, please sign up on the CSYC website or contact the CSYC Social Director Betsy Gutknecht at social.director@csyc.org  If you have questions, Call or Text Betsy @ 303-748-0708.

As a courtesy to our boat owners, the cancellations deadline for a refund is 48 hours prior to the sail. Be sure to thank your captain for the use of their boat and plan to help with de-rigging the boat at the end of the day.

Bring your PFD, sun protection, hat/glasses, rainwear, water, snacks if you want, an extra layer of clothing and non-marking shoes. We look forward to enjoying some great food, music, (dancing for those so inclined 😊), and sailing!

RECAP FROM PUEBLO SAIL, 6/2 – 6/4

Mel Steiner – Coordinator

Turnout this year was excellent, with a total of 11 people attending. There ended up being an additional sail on Friday, as two of the three captains and several crew arrived and rigged Thursday afternoon, 6/1. Captains for the weekend were Bob Brand (“Adagio”), Cliff Randall (“Valkyrie”), and Cindie Sandlin (“Healing Time”).

We lacked sunshine that weekend, but the rains were light and winds were decent. We enjoyed a campfire under a full moon after Friday night’s potluck. Here’s a question: How many Doggers does it take to get a campfire going? Answer: All of them! Note: This is a location joke, i.e. “you had to be there.”    But it was a great fire for roasting marshmallows, right Ronni?!?!?!?

At Saturday night’s dinner at Shamrock Brewing Company, we splurged in sharing orders of their Scotch egg appetizers, and then their dessert of Bread Pudding with Irish cream sauce.

In keeping with tradition, this year’s Pueblo weekend was another enjoyable event. Thanks to everyone who participated in the “road trip.”

The cost is $20 for members and $30 for guests.  We may go out to eat dinner if people want to before heading home. Join us for our Ladies Day Sail

Sunday July 16th at Chatfield at 10:00!

We will meet before the sail at 9:15 at the tables directly in front of the South Marina office and restaurant for breakfast if you wish. Bring some fruit and pastries to share, or order from the Seagulls grill. We will then assist the captains with rigging the boats if necessary.

Everyone is invited, and LADIES SAIL FREE today, however you must register in advance with full payment so that we may make arrangements with the captains to have enough boats. Space is limited and sign-up deadline is at the meeting on 7/13.

Cost $20 members, $30 guests. Ladies must reserve their place with a check made out to the Salty Dogs and mailed to the coordinator (see below). This will be held and returned when we see you on sail day.

Note: please do not make a Ladies reservation via the payment platform online as it does not have a refund option and creates a headache for our Treasurer.

Others (guests and non-Ladies,) may register for the sail on the Salty Dogs website using the “shop” option online.

Don’t forget your PFD, sun protection, hat/glasses, rainwear, extra layer of clothing, and non-marking shoes.

The cancellation deadline is 48 hours prior to sail day, as a courtesy to the boat captains. After that there will be no refunds.

REMINISCING

by Gari (Gaines) Westkott

As I sit on the bow lounge deck of a Viking ship sailing from Dublin to Iceland (trip started in Barcelona, Spain), I look back on my 40 years in Salty Dog Sailing Club.  The club was created in my living room as a protest against the concept creator, George Brown, of Red Sails Sailing Club, a sub club of Beyond Divorce. (We bolted because he would not allow married couples in Red Sails.) I was the second commodore, later to also be two more times.  We began with about 160 members and 16 boats and lots of trips to McConaughy and Glendo, Wy. Only later did we branch out to the Caribbean and the oceans. I figured I have sailed on over 12 Colorado lakes and 6,000 miles of ocean – Tahiti, Fr. Marquesas, Panama, Nicaragua, Greece, Canada and most of the Caribbean islands, always packing few clothes, no make-up, boat shoes, gloves, binoculars, GPS, charts, and books to read.

My old skipper, Shannon, asked me to sail with him to Thailand 3 years ago, both of us at 81 years of age. I told him “No”- I’m too old, too slow, no strength, no balance. I did not want to be Tristen Jones (the ultimate sailor who sailed since he was 13 over 345,000 miles in small boats. Lost his leg, bought a catamaran, and took to the seas again, not to be seen since.) But here I am at age 85 on a Viking cruise ship, the most luxurious small “big “ship I’ve been on. The “Saturn” was only 40 days old – sparkling new and with excellent food. (You owe yourself a trip like this in your old age.)  I am sitting here looking at 20-foot waves and reminiscing about all the skippers and mates whom I’ve met and sailed with and the sailing trips I’ve had with the club.  I want to thank you all for sharing your boats with others.

FYI The club is now 40 years old. Happy Birthday Salty Dogs!

Your ex-commodore from way back, Gari (Gaines) Westkott
