June 2023 Newsletter

June 2, 2023 By Jeremy Frett

Volume 42 Issue 6 – June 2023

Diana Bliss – Interim Commodore

Commodore’s Log

HI Sailors— We are getting ready for our first weekend sail to Lake Pueblo on June 2nd-4th. So, boat owners are cleaning their boats and doing maintenance to get their boats ready for us. Even though the weather was cloudy, we had three boats head out on Saturday, May 13th for a great day of sailing. It was cooler but there were winds even gusty at times.

At our next Member meeting on June 8th at 5:30 PM at Chatfield Marina Seagulls restaurant, we will be opening up the sign-ups for the New Members sail on June 25th. This is where the club honors our new members with a FREE sail but only on this date and you must RSVP. Members are also welcome but must pay the daily rate ($20). We will have a sail first then have a Bar-B-Q for lunch. See Ron’s article for details. Also, sign-ups for the first Moonlight sail on July 1st at Chatfield with Marilyn as coordinator will be taken. There is still room for the Granby trip July 28th-30th but get your money in soon. Your check is your reservation.

Since I’m covering two jobs, I just wanted you to know that there are still sail coordinators needed for the following dates: July16-Ladies Sail, August 20th-Scavenger Hunt, August 25th- Moonlight Sail (or could change the time), and September 24th-Full Harvest Moon Sail. Coordinators get to sail for FREE on the day of their day sail!!  If you are interested in volunteering for any of these sails, please email me at onthewater@saltydog.org. Or see me at the meetings.

Thanks to Melissa, Cindie, Marilyn, Ronnie W. and Ron for stepping up and offering to help out when we passed out our new brochures and business cards, advertising our club.

PUEBLO SAIL – FRIDAY, JUNE 2 THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 4

If you haven’t yet registered for the Pueblo sail or you thought that the event might be full, there is ONE MORE OPENING for a crew member! Also, all 3 captains are arriving on Thursday, June 1, so there will be an additional sail on Friday afternoon, June 2.

The campground is full, so if you register and pay to attend, you will be on your own finding lodging. Below are 2 hotels on the North end of the reservoir, near Highway 50, and 2 hotels near the South end of the reservoir. These are not endorsements, but just a short list of what appears from doing a Google search:

North:

Baymont by Wyndham – 3626 N. Freeway Rd.

Wingate by Wyndham Pueblo – 4711 N. Elizabeth St.

South:

Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham – 3343 Gateway Dr.

Hampton Inn & Suites – 3315 Gateway Dr.

Updates, May 2023:

  • For attendees who plan on camping, the Arkansas Loop campsites are full.
  • If you haven’t already registered/paid to attend,

Join the Salty Dogs in the first weekend sail of the season. Sails will be both Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting, with the possibility of an additional Friday afternoon sail at the captains’ discretion depending on what time the boats have been rigged.

Friday evening is a potluck at the South Marina campsite and Saturday night is dinner at The Shamrock Brewing Company in downtown Pueblo. Attendees are on their own for breakfast and lunch all weekend. Reservations are first-come/first serve and your on-line payment or check payable to Salty Dogs is your reservation.

Cost is $120 for members and $180 for guests. Register on-line and pay with credit card at:

https://www.saltydog.org/product/guests-weekend-sail-at-pueblo-reservoir-friday-june-2-through-sunday-june-4/ You may also bring a check to the May 11 monthly meeting, or mail your check to Mel at the address below.

Trip is coordinated by Mel Steiner, 720-933-8554 (voice/text), msteiner@interiorconnections.biz

Attendees will receive detailed info including a list of nearby lodging venues for those who are not camping.

MOONLIGHT SAIL ON SATURDAY, JULY 1 at CHATFIELD

If you haven’t sailed at night you’re in for a treat!  No jet skis and few power boats, no “bake and bob” like we experience on hot summer days.  A nearly full moon is forecast and we hope the weather cooperates.  Bring warm gear just in case.  Head lamps are encouraged.  The moonlight sails are fun and really popular so sign up early.  Pay online at:  saltydog.org.  Go to the Shop tab.

TIME: Meet at 5:30 – set sail about 6:15.

LOCATION:  Chatfield outside of Seagulls restaurant at the tables.  We’ll assign boats and there will be time for a pre-sail dinner – either bring your own or purchase from the restaurant.  Depending on wind, its fun to raft up later in the evening, so bring a munchie to share and your own beverage.  Just remember, no alcohol until we’re at the dock for insurance and safety reasons.

COST:  $20 members, $30 guests.  Your payment secures your reservation.

NOTE:  Each boat captain will indicate the approximate time they will be returning to the dock.    Some stay out later than others but usually we’re out until 8 or 9 so plan accordingly.      Sign up sheets will have details but for the safety of everyone, the captains and the coordinator will have final say.  Folks who sign up early will get preference on boats.  Coordinator:  Marilyn Allen, homesbyma@gmail.com with any questions.

New Day Sail to Dillon on Saturday, July 8th

We like to sail at Dillon, so I added another day Sail to our sailing schedule. We will be meeting up at Dillon Marina at the white yacht club tent at 10:15 am and set sail by 11:00 AM or earlier if everyone is there. I have two boats committed right now and maybe can get one more Why Buy boat, but space will be limited. First to pay online will have a reservation. Cost is $20 for members and $30 for guests. We may go out to eat for dinner if people want to before heading home. Bring your sailing gear, rain gear, hat , sunscreen, your PFD jacket, snacks/lunch, and a fun attitude! Questions email me at or call me at 303-424-7841. Coordinator for this sail is Diana and I’ll be taking sign ups at the June 8th meeting.

Lake Granby Sailing trip—July 28th—30th, 2023

The Salty Dogs are finally going back to Lake Granby but NOT on the fourth of July weekend!  We will have a potluck dinner on Friday night where you bring a side dish to share, and the club will provide an entree and paper products. Saturday night we will go out to eat in Grand Lake, probably at the Sage Brush.  Hopefully we will get two or three days of sailing, depending on the weather and when people come. We are staying in the Stillwater campground. We have some sites in Loop C —#95, #104, #105, & #107. If you would like to join us, please go to the website www.recreation.gov under “Stillwater, Co” and reserve your campsite somewhere in the campground, if there’s openings. Campsite #107 is reserved for Cindie and Keith who have the trailer and cook site. Campsite # 105 is reserved for Diana but can share it with a tent person. Probably #107 will be our gathering place for Friday dinner. I will be sending out a list of possible hotels in the area, but you might want to go ahead and do a search for “hotels near Stillwater Campground” or you could contact this private campground nearby called Elk Creek Camp and RV Park at 970-627-8502. Let me know where you will be staying. This year we have two sailboats and one motorboat. My friend Kathy Z. Has the motorboat up there and she can bring people water skiing, or pulling on a big floating coach, or just riding around the lake. If you are a boat owner and would like to bring your boat, please contact Diana ahead of time. The cost of the trip will be $70 for members and $105 for guests. Please pay online as soon as possible since there are limited spots. Your payment is your reservation for the trip!!

New Rates for day sails

Members $20

Non-Members $30

The reason for the increase is to help offset increasing costs that we are currently dealing with.

  • The rate increase for the Square on credit card transactions has caused us to discontinue a convenient way to collect fees and membership renewals.
  • Meetup requires an annual fee for us to operate as a group. I checked our group numbers on-line. There are currently 385 people, which I realize don’t come to the meetings or sails at this time but could be an option for reaching possible boat owners.
  • Different incentive ideas to get more boats and boat owners involved with the club.

Salty Dog Cancellation policy

All persons attending a sailing event are expected to pay the full amount of the trip donation prior to departure. The cancellation deadline for multiday events will be determined by venue. Participants cancelling prior to the deadline will be charged a 20% cancellation fee and refunded 80% of the deposit. Cancellations after deadline will lose their deposit, except in the case of hardship. Cancellations must be 1) dated 2) in writing and 3) received by coordinator either e-mail, text or letter prior to deadline.

For day sails, no refund will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to the event.

Attention Sailors— Sail Coordinators needed!!

We need members to step up and volunteer to coordinate a day sail or

evening meeting sail. You will get training and/or a mentor. Benefits are

Volume 42 Issue 4 – April 2023

Neisha Atchley – Commodore

Commodore’s Log

“Sailing unties the knots in my mind.” Al Noble

I had the opportunity to travel in the west and southwest part of our state in March and all I saw was snow. Valleys full of snow, mountains covered in blankets of snow. My mind turned to how beautiful this spring will be. Us, Salty Dogs, look to the snow as an indicator for our lake levels in anticipation of the sailing season. Our water levels look to be better this year.

I had a family emergency and crisis unfold in March and I appreciate all the heart felt words from everyone. I thought about how when a boat starts heeling beyond what the helmsman is comfortable with, let go of the main sail is what I was taught. I thought about that advice as it applied to my family’s situation. To let go of things that weren’t essential, to be flexible as plans changed by the hour.

Sailing unties the knots in my mind has never felt truer for me. I look forward to returning to the water, the wind, Salty Dog friends.

Commodore’s Log

“Sailing unties the knots in my mind.” Al Noble

I was talking with my daughter, Carson, about sailing and she said, “Sailing is like camping but on the water.” Since taking up sailing a couple of years ago sailing has been the top competitor for my camping time during the summer. Sailing, camping, being outside in general are ways to untie the knots in my mind. Talking with our Salty Dog members, I would say being outdoors is a something we all enjoy whether on the water or on land.

Looking forward to spring’s arrival, we have the Landlubbers Awards Ceremony on March 9th. Let’s celebrate together.

Doris, our Dryland Coordinator, has a brunch at the Landing scheduled this month. Music, tasty food and companionship, a trifecta for a wonderful time.

Coming in April, we will have a sail coordinators meeting, an opportunity to learn or review how to coordinate a sail. Keep an eye out for details.

****Hoodies****

We are putting together an order for Salty Dog Hoodies. An 8oz 50/50 Gildan zipper hoody will be approximately $35.00. Please email commodore@saltydog.org if you would like to order one.

Jokes of the Month

  1. What do you do with a drunker sailor?

Worry he’s gonna get wrecked!

  1. “Can you go pick up my boat? It’s at the dock.”

Oh no! Is it sick? You should give it some vitamin sea.

  1. A pirate walks into a bar with a ship’s steering wheel in his pants.

The bartender says: “Hey, did you know you’ve got a steering wheel in your pants?”

“Aye, sir that it be, “says the pirate, “it’s driving me nuts!”

  1. At the regatta, the blue sailboat hit the red one…

They were marooned!

  1. Guy goes out on a friends yacht and asks, “don’t these cheap yachts sink all the time.”

His brother answers: “All the time? If it’s gonna sink, it’ll only be once!”

  1. Two sailors talking, the first one says, “My girlfriend just sailed to the Caribbean.”

“Jamaica?” The other one asked.

“Heck no! She’d been wanting to go for a long time.”

  1. When is it time to paint another coat on a pirate ship?

When its timbers be shivering!

  1. What do British sea monsters eat?

Why fish and ships, of course!

  1. Guy at the Marina: “So which of these boats is the one I won in the dice game?”

“Yacht C,” the attendant says.

“No. Craps!”

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

I just wanted to thank everyone for the great year.  It was a privilege being the Commodore for 2022.  Enclosed are the minutes of the last Board Meeting.  Hope you all have a Very Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you in 2023.

Diana

Salty Dog 2022 Annual Meeting Minutes

November 10, 2022

Meeting called to order at 6:32pm

Attendance: Members: Susan Lythgoe, Ron Vasquez, Jeremy Frett, Melissa Steiner, Diana Bliss, Marilyn Allen, Michael Cranna, Neisha Atchley, Zeke Zebauer, Mark Graas, Doris Ferry, Larry Moreland, Brooke Moreland, Ellie Watson, Cindie Sandlin

Guest: Loy Oaks was introduced by Doris Ferry

Cindie Sandlin took minutes for Cliff Randall.

Ellie Watson read the 2021 minutes.

Diana Bliss and Ellie Watson reminded folks to renew membership before December 31st for a discount of $5 off single membership and $10 per couple.  Ellie Watson said she has paper applications, and it was affirmed that people can still renew online but need to fill out a new paper copy along with all signatures for completion of membership.

2022 Reports from Board of Directors:

Diana Bliss – Commodore

Led SDSC meetings, contacted board members about upcoming newsletter articles, assisted and coordinated various sails, general coordination of all Salty Dog Sailing Club Activities, Events and Sailors.

Mark Graas – Vice Commodore

Clarified Insurance coverage for the Salty Dogs Club and assisted boat Owner’s with their coverage. Insurance article in Newsletter.

Assisted with meeting agendas, coordinated, and cooked at several meetings with sailing afterwards, assisted sailors with boat prep, and led several events such as raffle, trivia, games, and elections.

Instrumental in leading the New Members sail.

Covered for Commodore Diana Bliss when needed.

Brooke Mooreland – Treasurer

Total revenue for 2022 is $4,675 which is down $465 from the prior year. Revenue from membership dues is $2,345, $95 more than the previous year. This year’s expenses are $3,925 which is $1,300 less than the previous year. We have a small profit this year vs. a loss last year.

Ellie Watson – Membership

We ended up with a membership right around 60.  I kept a roster with 3 different categories:  a general membership list of names, addresses and other contact information, a list of boat owners with information about their boats, and a list of each member’s emergency contact info in case of accidents while boating.  Those later 2 lists should be given to the On the Water chairman, so they can be made available to the various outing coordinators.  The first list, with its updates, needs to go to the Newsletter (Dog Tales) editor.  The Webmaster had set it up that I got a copy of all payments made through the website which made it easy for me to know when people’s dues were paid online.  I contacted all new members as well as a few people whom other members referred to me for possible membership.  As in previous years, we’re offering a $5 per person discount for those who pay their 2023 dues before the new year.

Volume 41 Issue 10 – October 2022

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

I can’t believe it’s already fall and the leaves are changing later this year. I just got back from Granby. The leaves were changing at 10,000 ft. and above.  So, we are ending our 2022 Sailing season with one last sail on October 8th at Cherry Creek.

As our year goes on, this is not the end of activities. We still have elections of officers coming up in November 10th, the Christmas party in December 8th, and various Dry Land events throughout the winter months. In February, we have a Landblubbers event where we honor funny or unusual events that happened during the year to our members. If you can think of anything from this past sailing season worth noting, please let me or someone on the board know about it.

Our October 13th member meeting will be meeting at our “new place” called The Shack located at 151 W. Mineral Ave. #101. Littleton. Meeting starts at 6:00pm. It’s in the Safeway shopping center, corner of South Broadway and Mineral. Our program will feature Cliff Randall who will be talking about crewing on passage delivery of boats in coastal waters.  It should be interesting since Cliff has had lots of experience delivering boats to many different places. Hope to see you there!

This is our official announcement for our Annual Meeting to elect Board Members for the 2023 sailing season. The date is November 10th at 6 PM. Dillon Sail Recap

As usual Lake Dillon in September provided good sailing conditions and mostly nice weather. You can’t beat the beautiful scenery and the challenging sailing conditions the lake has to offer. We had 16 members, and 3 guests attend the event. Zeke provided his Columbia 27, Jim & Ellie their Catalina 22 and a special thanks to Cliff who brought his Catalina 22. Shane and Mike were kind enough to arrange for Why Buy Boats. We really appreciate all those who made boats available for the outing.

Friday was another typical enjoyable sailing day on the lake. Nice to see all the boats out. We had our group dinner at Sabor Mazatlan and the selection of entrees was extensive and the food was good. We also had a couple of bumps in the road with them. First, they committed to one table which they didn’t provide and second, they insisted on a single bill which makes it very difficult for us.

On Saturday the weather was not as nice. There were three weather fronts coming from different directions in the afternoon. We were watching them closely and decided to head into the marina at about 3:30 or so. Our mistake was continuing to sail in when the prudent thing to do was take down the sails before the storm hit. Thankfully, we had four very experienced sailors on board and were able to douse the sails before any damage or other incidents occurred.

On Saturday night the Watson’s hosted a potluck at their condo, lots of great fellowship, drinks, and food. A good time was had by all.

Sunday was another nice day on the lake and a great way to end a wonderful weekend on Lake Dillon.
