Volume 42 Issue 10 – October 2023
Diana Bliss – Interim Commodore
As I write this article the last day of summer is waning and the first day of fall is coming soon! I was recently up at Estes Park and the leaves were just barely starting to turn. But that doesn’t end the sailing season! We still have our last sail on the Harvest Moon on Sept. 30th at Chatfield and there might be an opportunity if boat owners want to go out in October to sail. So, watch for email blasts about October sails! Our October member meeting on Thursday, October 12th will be held at IHOP in Belmar, 389 S. Wadsworth Blvd, at 18:00. Cliff will be presenting his adventures in Rhode Island.
Recapping the end of sailing season, we had three sunny days of sailing on Lake Dillon and tried a New Mexican restaurant which treated us to a free after dinner drink! Also, the last Saturday potluck dinner was held at Jim Watson’s before his closing. Everyone had a good time! Thanks, Jim, for all the enjoyable years hosting this dinner. Another Sailgrass dinner and music was hosted by the CSYC and joined by 10 salty dogs on three boats.
Looking ahead we have a dryland event, Octoberfest, Friday September 27th, at a real German restaurant, our annual Christmas party, Dec 14th with live music (details coming up), and, elections of officers, November 9th, which helps keep the club alive!
This is our official announcement of our Annual Meeting in November 9th at 6 PM for the election of officers for the 2024 sailing season. Listed below are the articles from our by-laws which describe each office position and their duties. Please take a look at this and see if you would fit into one of these positions. It’s a great way to give back to the club or if new to get involved with the club and meet new people. I know I’ve talked to some of the members but let me know if you are interested in any of these positions. If you can’t make the annual meeting and would like to vote by absentee ballot, please contact me and I’ll send you one by email before the meeting. Absentee ballots are due back to me by Monday, October 30th. Any questions, please contact me by email or call 303-424-7841.

Sailing northern waters
a short trip to Lake Superior and Apostle Islands territory
By Marilyn Allen
In mid-September, I traveled to Bayfield WI to participate in two sailing classes on Lake Superior – one for the ASA 104 (Bareboat Chartering) and the other for the ASA 114 (Sailing Catamarans). It was quite a challenge for my body and mind…. As I recall, the last time I took a written test was in college and that was “a couple” of years ago! I flew into MSP, then had a 5-hour drive north through beautiful countryside to reach Bayfield. Lots of farms, white clapboard houses on huge green lots, lots of trees with a few trees changing color and lakes everywhere~ It was a very enjoyable drive and I’d allocated time to enjoy it. I arrived early evening at Pike Bay Marina which is one of the largest in the area with over 200 slip spaces and a luxurious clubhouse facility with PRIVATE SHOWERS, full kitchen, fresh coffee in the morning and even washers and dryers – all available to slip owners and guests.
I never thought I’d be sailing in ski clothes, but they felt pretty good. The Apostle Island area is gorgeous and well worth a trip – beautiful scenery and very friendly people. I’ll be going back!
Nighttime temperatures are crisp and on my first night sleeping on the Cat the inside temperature was about 56 degrees. Only the end of my nose was sticking out of my down sleeping bag! Then we had two days of classes on a 38 ft monohull with 10-20 kt winds and basically sunny cool weather. We learned a LOT about diesel engines, docking, some navigation and charting, safety, and the operation of radio, using emergency equipment and then preparing for a charter and more. I learned a lot and even though I’ve participated in charters before there was a lot more to learn and our instructor, Rick, was very patient. Also, test-taking is long in my past and the 104 caused me to sweat a bit although at least I passed…just not the way I would have liked to.
The next 2 days were sailing on the Catamaran. By then I’d found the boat heater. Docking with two engines is both fun and challenging as we learned to spin the boat (slowly) 180 degrees while moving forward or backward very little. Steering a course is different because the line to follow is several feet to one side or the other of the bow, depending on where the helm is. Cats are very different to turn with minimal adjustment to the main sheet and lots of work with the jib.
Compared to the newbies I knew quite a bit already but learning everything I need to know to captain a charter boat leaves a lot of gaps which are going to be worked on during the winter. It’s a LOT of work and responsibility and I’ve got a lot more to learn. My hat’s off to the wonderful folks who have invited me along on your trips. I never fully appreciated you and if invited along again, I can assure you that I’ll be a much better crew person and who knows? Maybe even more!
Pricing for SDSC Sails
Day Sail Rates Meeting Sail Rates

Members $20 Members $10
Non-Members $30 Non-Members $15
New Vouchers
Because of the situation of so many people signing up for the new member sail on June 25th and a few sign-up issues, a number of vouchers will be sent to new Members who paid ahead of time and could not get on a boat. When you get this voucher by email from the treasurer, you will have to print it out and when you want to sign up for another sail (equally priced sail) and use that voucher, you will have to call the coordinator of that sail to get signed up. You can either send the coordinator a photo or scan of the voucher, or hand it to them at a meeting. But remember you are not signed up until the date you show proof of the voucher. Handing out vouchers will not be the normal routine. Also, the voucher may NOT be applied toward any multi-day sail. You will need to sign up and pay online ahead of the deadline or early so you’ll get a spot. Since we have limited boats in the Denver area, and a lot of people who want to go sailing, it’s always been first come (date of payment) first served.
Salty Dog Cancellation policy
Here is our cancellation policy, as per our financial guidelines:
All persons attending a sailing event are expected to pay the full amount of the trip donation prior to departure. The cancellation deadline for multi-day events will be determined by venue. Participants cancelling prior to the deadline will be charged a 20% cancellation fee and refunded 80% of the deposit. Cancellation after the deadline will lose their deposit, except in the case of hardship. Cancellations must be dated, in writing and received by coordinator either e-mail, text or letter prior to deadline. For day sails, no refund will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to the event.
