Volume 42 Issue 6 – June 2023
Diana Bliss – Interim Commodore
HI Sailors— We are getting ready for our first weekend sail to Lake Pueblo on June 2nd-4th. So, boat owners are cleaning their boats and doing maintenance to get their boats ready for us. Even though the weather was cloudy, we had three boats head out on Saturday, May 13th for a great day of sailing. It was cooler but there were winds even gusty at times.
At our next Member meeting on June 8th at 5:30 PM at Chatfield Marina Seagulls restaurant, we will be opening up the sign-ups for the New Members sail on June 25th. This is where the club honors our new members with a FREE sail but only on this date and you must RSVP. Members are also welcome but must pay the daily rate ($20). We will have a sail first then have a Bar-B-Q for lunch. See Ron’s article for details. Also, sign-ups for the first Moonlight sail on July 1st at Chatfield with Marilyn as coordinator will be taken. There is still room for the Granby trip July 28th-30th but get your money in soon. Your check is your reservation.
Since I’m covering two jobs, I just wanted you to know that there are still sail coordinators needed for the following dates: July16-Ladies Sail, August 20th-Scavenger Hunt, August 25th- Moonlight Sail (or could change the time), and September 24th-Full Harvest Moon Sail. Coordinators get to sail for FREE on the day of their day sail!! If you are interested in volunteering for any of these sails, please email me at onthewater@saltydog.org. Or see me at the meetings.
Thanks to Melissa, Cindie, Marilyn, Ronnie W. and Ron for stepping up and offering to help out when we passed out our new brochures and business cards, advertising our club.

PUEBLO SAIL – FRIDAY, JUNE 2 THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 4
If you haven’t yet registered for the Pueblo sail or you thought that the event might be full, there is ONE MORE OPENING for a crew member! Also, all 3 captains are arriving on Thursday, June 1, so there will be an additional sail on Friday afternoon, June 2.
The campground is full, so if you register and pay to attend, you will be on your own finding lodging. Below are 2 hotels on the North end of the reservoir, near Highway 50, and 2 hotels near the South end of the reservoir. These are not endorsements, but just a short list of what appears from doing a Google search:
North:
Baymont by Wyndham – 3626 N. Freeway Rd.
Wingate by Wyndham Pueblo – 4711 N. Elizabeth St.
South:
Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham – 3343 Gateway Dr.
Hampton Inn & Suites – 3315 Gateway Dr.
Updates, May 2023:
- For attendees who plan on camping, the Arkansas Loop campsites are full.
- If you haven’t already registered/paid to attend,
Join the Salty Dogs in the first weekend sail of the season. Sails will be both Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting, with the possibility of an additional Friday afternoon sail at the captains’ discretion depending on what time the boats have been rigged.
Friday evening is a potluck at the South Marina campsite and Saturday night is dinner at The Shamrock Brewing Company in downtown Pueblo. Attendees are on their own for breakfast and lunch all weekend. Reservations are first-come/first serve and your on-line payment or check payable to Salty Dogs is your reservation.
Cost is $120 for members and $180 for guests. Register on-line and pay with credit card at:
https://www.saltydog.org/product/guests-weekend-sail-at-pueblo-reservoir-friday-june-2-through-sunday-june-4/ You may also bring a check to the May 11 monthly meeting, or mail your check to Mel at the address below.
Trip is coordinated by Mel Steiner, 720-933-8554 (voice/text), msteiner@interiorconnections.biz
Attendees will receive detailed info including a list of nearby lodging venues for those who are not camping.

MOONLIGHT SAIL ON SATURDAY, JULY 1 at CHATFIELD
If you haven’t sailed at night you’re in for a treat! No jet skis and few power boats, no “bake and bob” like we experience on hot summer days. A nearly full moon is forecast and we hope the weather cooperates. Bring warm gear just in case. Head lamps are encouraged. The moonlight sails are fun and really popular so sign up early. Pay online at: saltydog.org. Go to the Shop tab.
TIME: Meet at 5:30 – set sail about 6:15.
LOCATION: Chatfield outside of Seagulls restaurant at the tables. We’ll assign boats and there will be time for a pre-sail dinner – either bring your own or purchase from the restaurant. Depending on wind, its fun to raft up later in the evening, so bring a munchie to share and your own beverage. Just remember, no alcohol until we’re at the dock for insurance and safety reasons.
COST: $20 members, $30 guests. Your payment secures your reservation.
NOTE: Each boat captain will indicate the approximate time they will be returning to the dock. Some stay out later than others but usually we’re out until 8 or 9 so plan accordingly. Sign up sheets will have details but for the safety of everyone, the captains and the coordinator will have final say. Folks who sign up early will get preference on boats. Coordinator: Marilyn Allen, homesbyma@gmail.com with any questions.
New Day Sail to Dillon on Saturday, July 8th
We like to sail at Dillon, so I added another day Sail to our sailing schedule. We will be meeting up at Dillon Marina at the white yacht club tent at 10:15 am and set sail by 11:00 AM or earlier if everyone is there. I have two boats committed right now and maybe can get one more Why Buy boat, but space will be limited. First to pay online will have a reservation. Cost is $20 for members and $30 for guests. We may go out to eat for dinner if people want to before heading home. Bring your sailing gear, rain gear, hat , sunscreen, your PFD jacket, snacks/lunch, and a fun attitude! Questions email me at or call me at 303-424-7841. Coordinator for this sail is Diana and I’ll be taking sign ups at the June 8th meeting.
Lake Granby Sailing trip—July 28th—30th, 2023
The Salty Dogs are finally going back to Lake Granby but NOT on the fourth of July weekend! We will have a potluck dinner on Friday night where you bring a side dish to share, and the club will provide an entree and paper products. Saturday night we will go out to eat in Grand Lake, probably at the Sage Brush. Hopefully we will get two or three days of sailing, depending on the weather and when people come. We are staying in the Stillwater campground. We have some sites in Loop C —#95, #104, #105, & #107. If you would like to join us, please go to the website www.recreation.gov under “Stillwater, Co” and reserve your campsite somewhere in the campground, if there’s openings. Campsite #107 is reserved for Cindie and Keith who have the trailer and cook site. Campsite # 105 is reserved for Diana but can share it with a tent person. Probably #107 will be our gathering place for Friday dinner. I will be sending out a list of possible hotels in the area, but you might want to go ahead and do a search for “hotels near Stillwater Campground” or you could contact this private campground nearby called Elk Creek Camp and RV Park at 970-627-8502. Let me know where you will be staying. This year we have two sailboats and one motorboat. My friend Kathy Z. Has the motorboat up there and she can bring people water skiing, or pulling on a big floating coach, or just riding around the lake. If you are a boat owner and would like to bring your boat, please contact Diana ahead of time. The cost of the trip will be $70 for members and $105 for guests. Please pay online as soon as possible since there are limited spots. Your payment is your reservation for the trip!!
New Rates for day sails
Members $20
Non-Members $30
The reason for the increase is to help offset increasing costs that we are currently dealing with.
- The rate increase for the Square on credit card transactions has caused us to discontinue a convenient way to collect fees and membership renewals.
- Meetup requires an annual fee for us to operate as a group. I checked our group numbers on-line. There are currently 385 people, which I realize don’t come to the meetings or sails at this time but could be an option for reaching possible boat owners.
- Different incentive ideas to get more boats and boat owners involved with the club.
Salty Dog Cancellation policy
All persons attending a sailing event are expected to pay the full amount of the trip donation prior to departure. The cancellation deadline for multiday events will be determined by venue. Participants cancelling prior to the deadline will be charged a 20% cancellation fee and refunded 80% of the deposit. Cancellations after deadline will lose their deposit, except in the case of hardship. Cancellations must be 1) dated 2) in writing and 3) received by coordinator either e-mail, text or letter prior to deadline.
For day sails, no refund will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to the event.
