Volume 40 Issue 3 – March 2021
Commodore’s Log
Diana Bliss
I want to thank Marilyn and Bobby for putting on the Landlubbers Celebration virtually last month. We had a lot of good, funny stories which earned awards. Here’s a summary of the awards given: Broken Mast award—Bob Brand; Coordinator of the Year—Diana Bliss; SD of the Year—Ronnie Wilcox; New member of the Year—Mark Graas. The following were recognitions of sailing happenings this year: Hick and Looper—Charles Igel; Unflappable Captain—Cliff Randall; Mr. Enthusiasm—Gary Kieft; Soggy Dog— Mike Mason; Dancing Latvian—Zeke Zebauer; Near Collision with Navy Subs—Peter Baumgardner and Molly Miller. I also want to thank the past Commodore, Marilyn Allen, and the Board for all the work to keep the sailing club afloat!!
It looks like March will be coming in warmer than usual, so maybe that means that warmer weather is just around the corner. With our Covid numbers going down, people getting their vaccines, and the county changing easing restrictions, operations of the sailing season and meetings may be looking up. I’m still hoping by May we will be able to meet somewhere in person. If you know of a restaurant with an outdoor porch area, please let Mark or myself know ahead of time so we can check it out.
Also we have a full sailing schedule coming up. What the club needs are volunteers to be sailing coordinators for each sail day or trip. We will be having a coordinators meeting in late April to train you with all the procedures and policies. It’s really not hard for a day sail and, if you are new, we can mentor you in the process. Let Shane know that you are interested in helping out the club.
If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season. Membership forms are on the website and you can pay there, too. Cliff will be taking orders for new hoody sweatshirts during March so look for details in this newsletter. Any questions, ask Cliff.
This month’s Program will be about Rough Weather and how to recognize it before it hits you.
Cliff Randall – Membership Report
We are currently at 26 members, not many people think of sailing in Colorado in February. I have had success with the Nextdoor website by starting a Sailing in Colorado group in attracting new members. I will reach out to those interested people when the weather warms a little more.
We are looking into ordering hoodies with the Salty Dog logo, there is a 12 unit minimum order, price is expected to be around $30.00 each, assorted colors can be seen at Gildan.com, search hooded sweatshirt 18500. You can pick any color but the ink for logo on back of sweatshirt will be either white or dark blue. Please contact me at Cliffrandall@hotmail.com. I will need your size, color of sweatshirt, ink color for logo, and your payment of $30.00 payable to Salty Dogs. Please mail payment to Cliff Randall at 7835 Nelson St, Arvada 80005.
Andrew Lewis – Dry Land Coordinator:
We do not have anything planned for March at the moment. If it looks like we are going to get a nice weekend in a couple of weeks – I will send out an email b
last and we can do the putt-putt as a “short notice event”. If anyone has any other ideas for a dryland activity, please email me at dryland@saltydog.org
Hope everyone is keeping safe and well. Hope to see you all soon!
Shane Brouillette – On the Water Coordinator:
So, here’s the deal. If you’re a member that’s willing to coordinate a sail this season, please check the sailing schedule in this newsletter and on the far-right column you will see several question marks. Those are sail events that I need to find members to make those sails happen. So…if you see one that you’re willing to take under your wing, please contact me and I’ll answer any questions you might have and hopefully assign you to that sail. shanebrulet@gmail.com
Tiffany Jordan – Newsletter:
Apologies for the lateness of this month’s issue. I moved to sunny Florida and have been getting settled. I landed in Fort Pierce so if anyone is ever sailing out this way, please let me know!
