Commodore’s Log Marilyn Allen
We’re finally getting some sailing in, although we’ve had a couple of very wet endings to
our sails. Mens’ Day was lots of fun with good winds, then we noticed darkening
skies. I was sailing with Dave, Gary was on another Why Boat with Blair. I believe
Moreland’s, being the most weather-savvy of all of us, had come in a bit earlier.
I suggested to Dave we get closer to the marina and he wisely suggested he turn on his
BIG motor. There was a HUGE rush for the marina as nearly every boat on the lake
headed for a slip or ramp with rain starting and lightning pecking all around us.
Navigating the marina was like a giant game of bumper cars !!!! Dave got his boat in
and docked just as the hail started, however it was coming into the cabin of his boat.
I looked out to see the wind blowing the water HORIZONTALLY off the tops of the
waves. I seem to recall that indicated gale force winds ! We could look out and see
Gary expertly docking the Why Buy amid mass confusion while Blair directed from the
bow, with water pouring down his face ! My understanding is the Fit-Bit, wallet, money
and much of Blair were all soaked through. Although I was in Dillon for the August
meeting, I hear things ended up pretty damp there as well
HINTS ON LIGHTNING !
First of all, why aren’t you off the water ???? If you’re stuck on the water during a
lightning storm, either huddle down in the cockpit or in the cabin and keep away from
anything metal.
We’ve got some great sails coming up. Thirteen of us will be on Dillon over Labor
Day. The sail filled up fast because we have such a limited number of boats that can
travel. Then we have the September meeting – on the dock at Chatfield, with sailing
after, weather permitting. Gather at 5:30 for a brief business meeting and we’ll head
out. I think it’s close to full moon time, so it should be a great evening. Sign up on line
if you want to sail. Also, we’ll have a sail in late September. Check our calendar!
SAVE THE DATES:
Our September meeting on the 12th at Chatfield docks, starting about 5:30.
