Commodore’s Log Marilyn Allen
Greetings, Salty Dogs –
By the time you see this, sadly, sailing season has ended. Now it’s time for the club to evaluate this year’s events and activities, see what worked well and what didn’t, lay plans for winter Dry Land Activities (skiing anyone?) and decide who will be guiding the club in 2020.
Fortunately, Dave Westfall feels he will be able to stay on as Web Master for the foreseeable future. Great news, since his skills and expertise are hard to match. With the exception of ‘On the Water’ Coordinator and Vice Commodore, the other folks on your board have agreed to serve another term, assuming they are re-elected by the membership. Please consider how YOU could help your club thrive.
Without these two positions filled, we will have no one arranging sails and no one setting up meetings. That doesn’t bode too well for the club, as I see it. If you have any interest in improving the club in one of these two important positions, get in touch. I’d be happy to tell you more about either one. Remember, the job description is “coordinator”, not do-it-all, so each position is one of organizing and delegating. Please offer your services and then come to the November Annual Meeting and provide your input and your vote. We’re back at Piccolo’s, 5:30 PM on Thursday, November 14th.
Speaking of end of sailing season, your Commodore, crew members Shane Brouilette and Molly Miller bid the sailing season good bye with an impressive day. Started early afternoon on Cherry Creek with mild winds. We had a couple of impromptu races with Blair and Gary Kieft, who also were on a Why Buy. We had hoped to sail until sunset. About 5:30, I observed a black cloud heading toward us that was getting blacker and bigger by the minute and I suggested it was time to go in. We headed for the marina, started the motor (thank heavens it started) and were securing sails when the gales began. I checked conditions on the Beaufort scale and estimate 40-50 mph gusts! We heeled over, but got the sails stashed as I motored into the channel. Was promptly hit with a blast that slammed our J-22, with bare poles, over 45 degrees to starboard. Not one to argue with a really angry Mother Nature, I completed the circle she had started for us for another try at the channel. This time the gust came onto our starboard bow and slammed us toward an entire row of docked boats. Gunning the motor and a hard turn to starboard got us headed back toward our slip and great crew work by Molly and Shane got us tied up in our slip with no slams or collateral damage. The wind was very nearly blowing us off the dock as we put away the jib…I was wearing my PFD on the dock!
Being good little sailors, Shane and I stayed to help Gary and Blair in. By now the wind was even stronger, their main was puddled in the cockpit and occasionally catching wind.
We grabbed lines as Gary aimed the boat and among the 4 of us, got her tied up safely to de-rig and stash sails in the dark and the gale force winds.
I think I said something like “you’re in, you’re safe, I’m freezing, I’m leaving”, while Shane was good enough to hang around and help. Safe to say it will be an end of the year sail none of us will soon forget.
And what is sailing without those moments of absolute boredom interspersed with times of total terror!
See you on the 14th. Right now, I’m gazing at the Pacific from my 8th story condo in Cabo and sleeping to the sounds of the crashing surf. Heaven!

Vice Commodore’s Log Kathy Hug
Hi Salty Dogs!
It is time again to come together on November 14 at Piccolo’s Restaurant, located at 3563 S. Monaco Pkwy, 5:30 PM for our annual meeting to summarize the activities of the club, discuss old and new business, and, most importantly, elect members to the Salty Dog Board for 2020.
The SDSC has thrived over its many years because of the participation of the membership.
Without member involvement and the activity of the board, we would not have this great club!
Dick and I have been members for about 18 years, a short time compared to some. What I have noticed is that the same people run for the board time and time again. While this is fabulous and greatly appreciated, new people are needed to bring fresh ideas and perspective to our activities. The board positions are a fun way to get involved and do not take up a huge amount of time. I know this because I’ve served in most board positions at one time or other over the years. It might even be the best way to get to know the names of all the members.
This year, most of the positions have interested parties willing to fill the offices, but if you would really like to run for an office, please throw your hat in the ring. A little friendly competition is always fun.
I will be relinquishing the reins of the vice-commodore position so step up if you would like to give it a try. Most of the responsibilities for 2020 have already been taken care of and finding a speaker for a meeting is easier than reefing a sail during a microburst. It is usually a matter of asking a club member to provide a presentation about their most recent sailing adventure.
I’m looking forward to seeing all of you at the meeting. I know you will bring your enthusiasm!
Don’t forget to send your reservation for the Holiday Party on December 14 at Piccolo’s. I’ve heard there is going to be great entertainment. Hope to see you there.

July 11, 2019 Meeting Sail
A’hhhooooyyyyy Mateys.
Greetings at the end of the 2019 season, to us in all our endeavors and entropy. I wrote most of what-could-be-an article, after an after-meeting sail, so here it is for all of us to enjoy. I am glad many of you have sailed in many places this summer and shared those tales with us.
Belatedly, here is my brief Post-Sail Write-Up, for the July 11, 2019 Meeting Sail:
OUT WE WENT
A small gathering of our club and three new people dependably formed on the docks for nice getting-to-know-each-other, current-goings-on, and future-sailing-events talk, REGARDLESS of the potential meteorological conditions on the reservoir in the next hours. Finely, the wind was beginning to blow. Sadly, this was due to the visible darkness in the west heading our way.
“Underway!” sounded.
Out we went– two boats — sailing slowly in 5 knots of wind, keeping an eye on the inbound storm, and with our skipper posted at the mast studying weather radar intensely on his phone/microcomputer.
We did not stray far from the harbor, so when lightning was reported 3 miles away, we turned to the marina. One boat docked and deboarded before the rain fell, while the second boat got to experience afresh the refreshment of Denver’s El Nino rain! Several of us were lacking rain gear, resulting in dismay of our lack of preparation and ability to bring the essentials to the event. [I among them: My mini poncho was conveniently located near the door but failed to get in my pack, and my rain jacket is safe at a friend’s house :-(. ] Thankfully I found shelter ashore before a moderate rain showered for 40 minutes, and the others found their own ways to cars, dryness and home.
Still a good adventure it was with it being much wetter for some than [the recent races] Wednesday, and drier for some than Wednesday! I hope our next Sail does not get rained out but sure am glad for the moisture.
“Moored!” –Bowman Gary
