Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

I made it back from Peru, but I was detained for five days since I had Covid. But I’m doing well and getting caught up on everything. We’ve had some changes in the sailing schedule, so be sure to take a look and see the articles in this newsletter. Please make note of the change in the member meeting date for this month—it will be Thursday July 7th still down at the Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield at 5:30 PM, with sailing at 6:30 PM. Marilyn will be coordinating the July 7th Member meeting sail, so go to the website to pay ahead of time.

At the July 7th Member meeting we will have several sails opening for sign-ups. On July 1st Shane will have an evening sail at Cherry Creek. See the email blast sent for details. The Big Mac trip changed venues to Lake Dillon because of low water levels, which hasn’t happened in the last five years! Carol K. is coordinating the July 15th-16th Dillon weekend sail. See her article for details and pay online—first pay, first serve!! Then on Saturday, July 23rd, Cindie will coordinate the Scavenger Hunt Sail. This was a lot of fun last year and should be this year too! Sign-ups will be open at the meeting in which you can pay then. See her article for all the details.

While I was gone, I heard that the New Member Sail and the Lake Pueblo weekend Sail both went well with good weather. Thanks go out to – Cindie for coordinating the May Member Sail, Mark G. – for the New Member Sail, Melissa for the Lake Pueblo sail, and Neisha for the June Member meeting Sail. That’s two new sail coordinators!! Good Job!!  Also, we couldn’t have these sails without the boat owners who volunteered their boats. In June we had Cliff R., Bob Brand, and Shane who had their boats available. We have had several new members join in May and June. Good job, Ellie!  Also, thanks to Shane for completing the sail schedule with coordinators for the rest of the year!!

A lot is happening, so I hope you are getting out to do some sailing with us! Remember the July Member meeting is Thursday the 7th at 5:30 PM with sailing at 6:30 PM. We encourage you to pay online ahead of time, so we know how many boats to try to get. See you all at the Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield!!

Smooth sailing, Diana

Marine salvage operation

So…..  while sailing a whybuy boat, somehow a mooring line was lost.  Hoping that it was lost close to the dock, Shane came back another day with a cobbled together grappling hook (3 large “S” hooks rubber-banded together) and threw and retrieved the hook about 20 times.  Alas, no luck.   Had to pay $100 to whybuy to replace it.  In my defense, the mooring line is so thick that the eye of the line is too big to put thru the eye of the boat cleat and only gravity is holding it on the cleat.

RECAP FROM PUEBLO SAIL, 6/3 – 6/5

Mel Steiner – Coordinator

For the first time in many years, no rain or squalls interfered with our Saturday or Sunday excursions on the lake. The only rain we encountered was on Friday’s commute to Pueblo. We had moderate winds on Saturday and light ones on Sunday.

One “hiccup” that weekend was that the South Marina’s docks were closed through the end of June for construction and slips were not available, which meant that our boats needed to pull out each afternoon and put back in the next day. But captains Bob Brand and Cliff Randall took that all in stride, and the crew was happy to assist.

There was a “bonus” sail Friday afternoon – Cliff ‘s boat was rigged early, so Valkyrie went out for a few hours with Bob Brand, Mark Graas, and Jeremy Frett crewing. Meanwhile, Ronni Willcox and Mel Steiner held down the fort at the campsite and prepared for the Friday night potluck.

We rafted up for lunch on Saturday, and Ronni prepared gourmet sandwiches! On Saturday night everyone went to the Shamrock Brewing Company in downtown Pueblo for the group dinner. The food and the service were great as always.

On Sunday during light to zero winds, Cliff motored into several coves and identified a few ideal places to drop anchor and raft up for lunch when we do this trip again next year. Thanks to everyone who made the Pueblo trip an enjoyable weekend!

Sailing/Boat Safety

Yacht safety is not unlike general boat safety. The safety equipment for yachting may be extensive, but these tools can help make sure that all the passengers stay safe. In addition to life jackets, yachts should have search lights that will enable the captain to see better after dark or during inclement weather. Search lights should be powered both by batteries and by the vessel’s power system. An emergency steering system is a good idea, as it can serve as a backup tiller in the event of a system failure. Man-overboard equipment should include components that will make it easier to retrieve a person who falls overboard. Other safety equipment that should be on board includes fire extinguishers, flares, bilge pumps, and a two-way radio for communication. If buying a used yacht, make sure that all of this gear is in place before taking the vessel out on the water for the first time. In addition to having these items, crew members must know how to use all of the safety equipment so that they can act quickly if there is an emergency.

  • A Boater’s Guide to the Federal Requirements for Recreational Boats(PDF)
  • Safety Equipment Compliance(PDF)
  • Yacht and Safety Briefing Checklist(PDF)

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that more than 70 percent of boating accidents occur due to operator error, so it’s important that the captain make sure that they’re fully equipped both with gear and with knowledge before they head out on the water. A boating education course can help reduce the incidence of accidents. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Power Squadron offer vessel safety checks for boaters as a way to help boaters ensure that they are operating their watercraft safely and legally. With attention to boating safety and maintenance of equipment, boaters can have enjoyable and safe outings on the water.

June 2022 Newsletter

June 2, 2022 By Larry Moreland

Volume 41 Issue 6 – June 2022

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

I’m writing my article early this month because I’ll be leaving the country for Peru and Galapagos this May 16th. With that being said, the weather is warming up nicely for sailing! Hopefully our first Chatfield meeting and moonlight sail will go well. We will be able to eat and meet at the Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield Marina for our June Meeting on the 9th and sail. We will meet at 5:30 PM for a short meeting and then sail at 6:30 PM. At this writing we are still in need of a coordinator for the sail. If you are new to the club or never coordinated before, this is an easy one to coordinate and Shane would be happy to mentor you on the procedure. Let Shane know if you would be interested in helping the club out.

At the June meeting, we will still have signups for the Big Mac trip, if it’s filled up in May, will be taking names for a waiting list. As of this writing, I have TWO SPACES LEFT. See article in this newsletter. There will be an evening sail on July 1st at Cherry Creek coordinated by Shane. He will be taking sign-ups at the June meeting. Also, we will be sailing the weekend of July 15th—17th at Dillon. Marilyn will be coordinating that trip and is taking sign-ups.

I want to give some thank-you’s to our May coordinators— Cindie S. – for the May meeting sail, and Mark G. – for the New Member sail, and to the boat owners (Cindie S, Brooke and Larry M, Marilyn A, and Shane B.) who volunteered their boats or used Why Buy’s for each of these events. Hope all their sails go well and everyone had a good time. Also, Welcome to all the new members so far this year. We still have a few day sail coordinator positions open in July, and September. Remember we couldn’t have our club function without our volunteer coordinators! So, think about stepping up to help the club, Training /mentoring and coordinators sail for free.

JUNE MEETING

Mark Graas – Vice Commodore

I have sold Woovey (West Wight Potter 19) to a wonderful couple that I hope to see join the Salty Dogs. Many, many wonderful memories. I still own “Da Di’ttle Bears” (Oday 15). I had too many trailers and something had to go.

The New Members Free Sail and WORLD-FAMOUS BURGERS event was a huge success, even though it was early! There were 15 people who participated, and the Burgers were mighty tasty! Thanks to all who participated!

Salty Dogs Membership – Ellie Watson

As of close to the end of May, the paid Salty Dog membership is 48 with 18 of the members having their own boat or a Why Buy membership.  There are one or two non-members who have signed up for the New Members Sail, so hopefully we might make it to 50 now that sailing season is getting underway.

Neisha Atchley – Dry Land Coordinator

The “Big Mac” Trip will be June 23-26th, 2022

The Salty Dogs will be heading back to Lake Mac. We will be staying at Admiral’s Cove again this year. You must register for this trip as there are limited spots on the boats. We have three boats this year so far with 8 crew spots available, with only more 2 spots available. I’ll be looking for another boat so we can take more people. Your check will reserve your spot on this trip. The price of this trip is only the price to bring the boats up. Each person is responsible for getting their own lodging! The price does not include a potluck dinner on Saturday night.

The price of the trip is $160.00 for club members and $240 for guests. This is based on the current three boats signed up. If we get a fourth boat, the cost may be reduced with a refund for the difference.

Please mail your check (payable to Salty Dogs) to Diana Bliss 7069 Xenon Ct, Arvada 80004. This will reserve your spot—it’s first come first serve. You can also pay online on the website saltydog.org.  I still have two spaces left on the trip!!

If you want to get reservations at Admirals Cove for a motel room, cabin, or campsite, best way is to go to their website admiralscoveresort.com . If you have trouble, call Mike, the manager at 1-402-201-4131. Mention that you are with the Club. As of this writing there is still some availability of various rooms and campsites. If you still need lodging, give me a call or email me because I have a list of other nearby places. If you have any questions after May 15th, please contact Cindie S. at newsletter@saltydog.org

May 2022 Newsletter

May 3, 2022 By Larry Moreland

Volume 41 Issue 5 – May 2022

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

It’s starting to look like spring with the flowers blooming and grass greening up. This means the beginning of sailing season!! We will be having our May Member Meeting down at Chatfield at the picnic tables at 5:30 PM.  The Seagulls restaurant isn’t open this early, but we will be having summer meetings there when it opens. This month please bring your own bag dinner for a quick meeting and sailing after that.

We have several May events and two weekend sails opening up for sign-ups. At the May 12th meeting we will have an evening sail and for those late birds a moonlight sail. See Cindie’s writeup below. On May 28th, will be the New Member sail coordinated by Mark. This is where we honor our new members to sail free and we have Mark’s famous burgers for a potluck lunch. It should be fun for all new and old members. See his article in this newsletter.

Mel is jumping in to coordinate our first weekend sailing event, June 3rd-5th at Lake Pueblo. She will be taking sign-ups and payments and possible wait list.  Also, sign-ups will be open for the Big Mac trip, June 23rd-26th This is the fourth year to be hosted at Admiral’s Cove. See the sailing announcements in this newsletter.

If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season, probably end of May.  Membership forms are on the website saltydog.org and you can pay there too. Any questions, ask Ellie or any board member about membership. Invite a friend to our in-person meeting.

Our June 9th meeting is still in need of a sail coordinator for the short evening sail after the meeting. It’s a good way for a new coordinator to get their feet wet and learn the ropes of how to put on a sail. We have a sailing packet with all the instructions and forms. Shane or I would be glad to mentor new coordinators so we ALL can get out sailing. Take a look at the sailing schedule and see where you could step up and lead a day sail!

Hope to see all your smiling faces at Chatfield Marina picnic tables (look for our flag) on May12th meeting at 5:30 Pm with sailing at 6:30.!

Mark Graas – Vice Commodore

Thank you to Zeke Zebauers for his presentation about “Sailing the Gulf of Riga on the Baltic Sea”.  It was very informative and interesting.

Salty Dogs Membership – Ellie Watson

As of the end of March we have 49 paid members.

Please be advised that next month’s May 2022 Salty Dog Newsletter is the last that will be automatically emailed out to members who have not renewed for 2022

Application forms and credit card payments can be found on www.saltydog.org.  The application needs to be filled out completely with signatures on BOTH pages.  Please do not write SAME on any of the lines, as I do not always have access to previous applications.

Once the application is complete with the necessary signatures and initials, there are 3 ways to get it back to me:

  1. Send it to me by snail mail. My home address is on page 1 of the application.
  2. Scan it and text or email it to me at membership@saltydog.org
  3. Take a picture of both pages and text or email it to me.

Neisha Atchley – Dry Land Coordinator

A handful of Salty Dogs and Pups met on April 16th at Colorado Journey’s Putt-Putt Golf Course. It was a windy spring afternoon, but the Salty Dogs still did a robust 18 holes of miniature golf. Marilyn and Ron are the 2 golfers to beat! The kids, Isabelle (Ron’s granddaughter) and Remy (Neisha’s grandson) played ahead of the group and scoped out the lay of the turf. We all agreed it was a blast. Credit goes to Commodore Diana for the fantastic dryland event suggestion even though she couldn’t attend.

CONSIDERING CAPTAINING A BAREBOAT CHARTER?

BY JOHN VENEMA                                                                                             14 APRIL 2022

At the request of commanders of Americas boating club, Colorado, and commodores of the salty dog sailing club, I have put together this outline of a presentation I gave a while back titled “Organizing, Planning and Captaining bareboat charters”.  What follows is simply my personal insights from being a crew member, first mate or, more often, a captain on over thirty bareboat charters. I hope that you can avoid learning from the ‘school of hard knocks’ by reading what I have written.

Many courses on seamanship are available and I highly recommend that you take them, along with getting experience on the water, before heading out to sea as a bareboat captain.

Qualifications: verify with the charter company that you qualify to captain the type of vessel you want to charter in the waters you want to sail. What is required often changes, so check with the charter company for updates. Some suggestions: check with “Victoria Sailing School” for ASA classes. Check with dream yacht charters.com (855-860-8902). Check with “international yacht training” [iytworld.com] for courses like “international bareboat skipper”. Excellent courses on seamanship are available around Denver and are offered by the United States Coast Guard auxiliary and Americas Boating Club – Colorado (previously “the United States Power Squadron”). Put together a resume’ that shows your training, seamanship courses you have completed and your experience on the water. Include the dates you sailed, the location and name of the charter company, vessel type and size, number of crew members and your duties. Remember that the charter company makes the final decision and should be able to inform you of local captaining requirements.

Organizing and planning the charter: evaluate the crew and select a crew that wants to “participate” (for example they want to learn and/or get hands on experience). Select an experienced first mate. Evaluate yourself: do you have the training, skills and experience needed? Do you want to be responsible for the safety and comfort of the crew? Involve the crew in the planning. Priorities should be to be safe and to have fun.

First planning session: discuss the sailing area and how to get there—bring charts, videos, cruising guide, airline connections, etc. Hand out copies of the bareboat contract showing deadlines for deposits and refunds. Discuss the costs of provisioning and daily boat expenses. Assign a purser to account for the money collected and paid out. Discuss plans for the days before and/or after the sail, discuss use of alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. Set a date for the second planning session and discuss what to pack in ‘soft sail bags’. Bring information regarding medical conditions, emergency contacts, passport, sail resume’ and airline arrival information. Bring checkbooks.

Second planning session: learn the skills and interests of the crew, then assign the (initial) duties and rotating duties for each crew member. Discuss the sailing itinerary—allow for bad weather delays and for fun time on shore. Discuss the type of sailing desired and provisioning duties. The purser then collects money for reserving the boat and for provisioning. Discuss what and how to pack so you don’t duplicate—for example, you do not need seven pairs of binoculars. Pack for safety and for fun. Consider “headlights”, a powerful flashlight, handheld VHF and GPS, and your personal PFD. Obtain each crew member’s travel plan and discuss how crew will meet at the destination.

Captaining (before setting sail): before the boat orientation have your list of questions ready for the marina staff and test everything before leaving the dock. Be sure to check the VHF, sails, running rigging, windlass, outboard engine, water tank levels and how to switch tanks. Are repair manuals in English? Check navigation instruments (on board and in your laptop). Enter your proposed waypoints. Also, get an orientation for the sailing area. Leave a float plan and emergency contact list with the charter company. Know how to get weather reports, medical aid, repair services, provisioning, etc. By now you should know the skills and interests of each crew member so be certain that each member of the crew knows how to perform their duties. Have the assigned ‘safety coordinator’ and quartermaster give their presentations. Every crew member should know emergency procedures and have a basic knowledge of how to operate the boat. Get a weather forecast. Do “sea trials” before leaving the harbor. Make sure everything is working properly before you head into open water.

While sailing:

1.) Keep a log that records: time, location, speed, track, and weather conditions.

2.) Expect the unexpected and think of “what if” solutions (e.g., what if a sudden storm approaches—where is the nearest shelter and what is the best action? What if someone falls overboard at this moment—what are the best actions to retrieve him asap?)

3.) Involve the crew. Hold a brief planning session each evening so the crew can agree on a plan for the next day.

4.) Communicate clearly, review hand signals and be sure that the crew knows “the plan” and “alternate plan” before anchoring and docking.

After the sail: learn how you can improve as a captain by asking for feedback. For example, hand out ‘anonymous’ surveys with open questions like “explain why you did or did not feel comfortable with the captain—his or her sailing skills, personality, ability to communicate clearly, be a team participant, etc.” Ask crew members if they would like a “letter of recommendation” for their resume’.

Finally: organize your journal and pictures, enjoy a farewell dinner on shore and consider a reunion date when everyone can laugh at all the unexpected events that occurred during the sail.

Wishing you fair winds and calm seas!

We have three boats this year so far with 8 crew spots available. I’ll be looking for another boat so we can take more people. Your check will reserve your spot on this trip. This price of this trip is only the price to bring the boats up. YOU are responsible for getting your own reservation for lodging! The price does include a potluck dinner on Saturday night.

If you want to get reservations at Admirals Cove for a motel room, cabin, or campsite, best way is to go to their website admiralscoveresort.com . If you have trouble call Mike, the manager at 1-402-201-4131. Mention that you are with the Club. As of this writing there is still availability of various rooms. If you still need lodging, give me a call or email me because I have a list of other nearby places.

April 2022 Newsletter

April 3, 2022 By Larry Moreland

Volume 41 Issue 4 – April 2022

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

As I’m sitting here and the weather is warming up into the 60’s this weekend, I’m wondering if we could be sailing in April! So, if anyone has their boat in and wants to go out, let Shane know. So, we’ll have to wait and see if winter is truly over.

Our Landlubber’s Celebration at the March meeting turned out to be really fun! Thanks to the Jeopardy Sailing game put on by Neisha! Here’s a run down of the awards given out this year:

Broken Mask Award — Mark G. (He can tell you his story)

Coordinator of the Year — Shane B.

Salty Dogs of the Year —Larry and Brooke M.

New Member of the Year — Nick C.

Special Recognition went to Mark for the “lucky cast” and to Cindie Sandlin for the “bird’s nest.”

Our April 14th member meeting will be in-person at our restaurant. See Mark’s article about the program. At the meeting we will have sign ups open for the Big Mac trip, June 23—26th, and the Lake Pueblo trip, June 3rd-6th. Hopefully with the warming weather in April we can do some miniature golf and dinner. See what Neisha has planned in this newsletter. That will be a good kick off for the sailing season to start soon.

I want to thank Brooke for organizing the state parks passes at a group rate for us again this year.

If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season, probably in May. Membership forms are on the website, and you can pay there too. Any questions, ask Ellie or any board member about membership. Invite a friend to our April meeting to check us out.

Hope to see all of you for the April 14th meeting at 6 PM at the Cafe Del Sol restaurant at 608 Garrison, Lakewood. Also, I’m looking into having our May 12th meeting down at Chatfield in the Seagulls Marina restaurant, if they’re open that early. Stay tuned for that.

Insurance for Boats

Mark Graas SD club verses Homeowner insurance investigation:

Salty Dog Sailing Club insurance has borrowed boat coverage which has nothing to do with members boats. VC Mark personal homeowners’ insurance (State Farm) liability covers Mark regardless if Mark gets benefits of membership and/or money for sailing guests or members on Mark’s boat (benefits that help with boat expenses).

Attention Boat Owners: If you will be using your boat for any Salty Dog Sailing Club events you will need to send a copy of your boat insurance (deck page) to commordore@saltydog.org at the beginning of the sailing season. If any boat owner would like a summary copy of the SD insurance, please email the commodore.

Salty Dogs Membership – Ellie Watson

As of the end of March we have 49 paid members.

Please be advised that next month’s May 2022 Salty Dog Newsletter is the last that will be automatically emailed out to members who have not renewed for 2022

Once the application is complete with the necessary signatures and initials, there are 3 ways to get it back to me:

  1. Send it to me by snail mail. My home address is on page 1 of the application.
  2. Scan it and text or email it to me at membership@saltydog.org

PUEBLO SAIL – FRIDAY, JUNE 3 THROUGH SUNDAY, JUNE 5

Come join the Salty Dog Sailing Club for the annual Pueblo event! We will be at the South campground and marina again, where there’s a free hoist for masts.

We have reserved one campsite so far, which can accommodate one additional vehicle for another person who will be camping. We will be reserving slips once we have a confirmation on the number of captains available that weekend.

We will be sailing on Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting. Everyone is on their own for breakfast and lunch both days of sailing. Friday night is the potluck dinner at the campground — bring your own meat to grill and a side dish to share, also BYOB. The Club will provide the paper products for dinner. For Saturday night’s dinner we’ll be at the Shamrock Brewing Company.

The cost for registration will be forthcoming, based on the number of boats available and the captains’ capacity for crew.

March 2022 Newsletter

March 4, 2022 By Larry Moreland

Volume 41 Issue 3 – March 2022

Commodore’s Log

Diana

Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss

We have had a series of snow storms this last month that has triggered the longing for warmer days, or at least more snow in the mountains!  Last year at this time (end of February) I was in Hawaii!! Covid seems to be decreasing and masks are flying off. So, it looks like our March meeting will be in-person at the Cafe Del Sol restaurant. We had to postponed the Landlubbers Celebration until the March meeting. It will be more fun in person. If you’re new, our Landlubber’s Celebration is where the old board recognizes some of our members for funny, heroic, or unusual stories that have happened in the last year’s sailing season. So, put on your thinking caps and send your stories to me atcommodore@saltydog.org. I could use a few more good stories for recognition. It’s not too late!! Also besides having our awards we will be having a fun game put on by Neisha.

We have a full sailing schedule for next summer in this newsletter. What the club needs are volunteers to be sailing coordinators for each sail day or trip. We will be having a coordinators meeting in late April to train you with all the procedures and policies. As coordinator get to sail free that day!! It’s really not that hard for a day sail and we can also mentor you in the process, if you are new. So, let Shane know that you are interested in helping out the club.

If you are still interested in joining us this year for sailing, it’s not too late to re-join the club! That way you will be on the first roster posted in the beginning of the season. Membership forms are on the website and you can pay there too. Any questions, ask Ellie at membership@saltydog.org.

We had our first dry land event, where eight of us had lunch in Golden and some people with dogs went for a walk down by the creek. It was a warm sunny day. Thanks Neisha for putting this together. Look for March dryland event in this newsletter.

See you at the next meeting,

Diana

February 2022 Newsletter

January 31, 2022 By Larry Moreland

Volume 41 Issue 2 – February 2022

Commodore’s Log

Diana Bliss

As we start out this new year and rounding the corner of the surge in corvid (hopefully), we will once again change our venue to Zoom for the next meeting on February 10th. We will also be postponing the presentation of the Landlubbers Awards until the March meeting. It’s more fun doing it in person and I’m sure we will be meeting in person for the March meeting!!

If you’re new, our Landlubber’s Celebration is where the old board recognizes some of our members for funny, or heroic, or unusual stories that have happened in the last year’s sailing season. So put on your thinking caps and send your stories to me at <commodore@saltydog.org>.

Our On the Water coordinator, Shane, has our new 2022 sailing schedule together, so take a look in this newsletter. We will be having 3-4 weekend trips and plenty of day sails, some weekday evenings, some weekend day ones. But, in order to make these A GO, we need volunteers to step up and coordinate a sail or two. So, during the February meeting it’s not too early to speak up.

You as coordinator get to sail free that day!!

Our February program will be “Restoring boats” presented by Nick Condos who restored his 25’ McGregor. Check out his presentation at our meeting.

I’ll be sending out the zoom link on a later email,

Diana

Thursday, February 10th member meeting at 6 PM

Zoom meeting

SS Warrimoo

A FASCINATING SHORT SEA STORY

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia.

The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought the master, Captain John Phillips, the result.

The Warrimoo’s position was LAT 0º 31′ N and LON 179 30′ W.

The date was 31 December 1899.

“Know what this means?” First Mate Payton broke in, “We’re only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line”.

Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.

He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ships position.

He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark.

Then he adjusted the engine speed.

The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor.

At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line!

The consequences of this bizarre position were many:

  • The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.
  • The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.
  • The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.
  • In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.
  • This ship was therefore not only in:
  • Two different days,
  • Two different months,
  • Two different years,
  • Two different seasons
  • But in two different centuries –

all at the same time.

Mark Graas – Vice Commodore

Mark and Doughnut enjoying a sunny winter day!!!

February’s meeting guest speaker will be Nick Condos.  His presentation will be the skills it takes to work on his newly purchased “fixer upper”.  It should be informative!

Ellie Watson – Membership

As of close to the end of January, the Salty Dogs have 36 paid members for 2022.  26 of these are membership renewals and the rest are either new members or members who joined last year after the sailing season was over.  There are about 25 members from 2021 who we are hoping will soon renew.

Application forms and credit card payments can be found at https://www.saltydog.org/membership/      The 2-page application needs to be filled out completely with signatures on BOTH pages.  Please do not write SAME on any of the lines, as I do not always have access to previous applications.

Shane Brouillette – On the Water Coordinator

Hi all….

Shane here …….. your on-the-water coordinator extraordinaire….

So, the 2022 sailing schedule is in this newsletter and I wanted to say a few words about it.   There are 4 moonlight sails listed.  I expect maybe 2 of them to happen.  They often get canceled due to clouds, cold nights and bad weather.  So, I schedule 4 in hopes of getting 2.

Next subject: I need to turn all of those question marks (?) in the right column on the following schedule, into names of people who will coordinate these sails.  I have been practicing my grovel to use at an actual meeting but that might not happen due to the covid mess. I hope to use members who are not already performing other club duties to ‘adopt’ one of these sails and make it happen.  If you have never done this, I will be your mentor and backup person. You, yourself will go free on any sail that you coordinate.  In particular, I am hoping to sweet-talk someone into doing the “meeting sails”.   There are 4 monthly meetings for the season that happen at Chatfield and after the meeting we then do an evening sail.  The right person for this job is someone that is likely to attend these 4 meetings since there is no advance planning and setting it up on the fly at the meeting is how they happen.

Questions, problems, donations……..   please, contact me at shanebrulet@gmail.com or 303-393-0555 (not a smartphone) in the afternoons.

That’s it folks…….   I hope that there are enough sails that work for each of you to make for an enjoyable season this year.

Cindie Sandlin – Newsletter

Well, this is my second newsletter and I hope that it is living up to the expectations of everyone who reads “Dog Tales”.  If you have any suggestions, information, stories, jokes, fun facts, pictures, etc. and would like included in the next newsletter, please email me at newsletter@saltydog.org

Diana asked me to “interview” a new member each month so we can get to know each other a little better.  I will be calling someone for the March 2022 “DOG TALES”.

JOKE TIME

The Last word on the subject….

One night at sea, the ship’s captain saw what looked like the lights of another ship heading for him.  He had his signalman blink to the other ship: ”Change your course 10 degrees south.”  The reply came back: “Change you course 10 degrees north.”  The ship’s captain answered: “I am a captain.  Change your ships course south.  To which the reply was: “Well, I am a seaman first class. Change your course north.”  This infuriated the captain, so he signaled back: “Dammit, I say change you course south.  I’m on a battleship!”  To which the reply came back: “And I say change your course north.  I’m in a lighthouse.”

Rooms will book fast so act soon.  She is working from her home, so please leave her a message and she will get back to you shortly. Please mention that you are with the Salty Dog Sailing club, and you will get a discount from the website prices.  The website is www.Admiralscoveresort.com if you would like to check the place out. Also, they have a new cancellation policy, better than past years, so ask about it. I have already got my campsite reservation and a cabin for the boat captains. I’m hopeful that I can get at least three boats for the trip. Cindie and Keith already have their campsite reserved and are bringing their boat.   I’ll be working on the price as soon as I get boats together. If you are a boat owner and are interested in bringing your boat, please call me or email me at <commodore@saltydog.org>.Please let me know that you did get lodging reservations and would like to come on this trip, as it is first come, first serve!!

— Thanks Diana

I never put my boat in the water this season, it is in dry storage, and life got in the way.  I am willing to sell for any reasonable offer, perhaps unreasonable.
