Volume 42 Issue 8 – August 2023
Diana Bliss – Interim Commodore
I can’t believe that the summer is more than half over!! We still have more great sails coming up! I’m packing up for the Granby trip as I write this article. Granby is one of my favorite lakes to sail in Colorado, next to Dillon. Our next member meeting sail is August 10th, meeting at the Seagulls restaurant at Chatfield at 17:30 for dinner and quick meeting, then going out for an evening sail at 18:30. Register online $10 for members and $15 for guests. Coming up next is the August 20th Scavenger Hunt at Chatfield. This will be a fun event and the third year running. See the article in this newsletter and register online. Also, to finish the month we have a Super Moonlight sail on August 25th, Friday, so see the article in this newsletter for details and times. Pay online to register. Of course, for Labor Day Weekend we are returning to Dillon from Sept 1st—3rd, Friday to Sunday for our last big weekend trip! See article for details and sign up online. You need to specify each day you want to sail for the online registration. Lastly, on Sept. 10th, Sunday, we have the Sailgrass sail with the CSYC club. They will be providing a Cajun style shrimp boil and bluegrass music for a separate charge to be paid to CSYC $15. If we can get enough boats for an afternoon sail for our members, we will have a reduced price of $15 for members and $22 for guests, to be paid on our website. It’s a great time so see the article in the newsletter.
Our last scheduled sail is the Full Harvest Moon sail on Sept 24th, or it might be changed to 23rd day sail. I don’t have a coordinator for that sail yet. So, it might be their choice and we NEED boats for that sail to go. Please let me know if you are interested in coordinating this sail in which you get to sail FREE! I will provide training and mentoring to get you through it. It’s not that hard and you will be helping the club out.

Lake Granby Sailing
July 28th—30th, 2023
The Salty Dogs are finally going back to Lake Granby but NOT on the fourth of July weekend! We will have a potluck dinner on Friday night where you bring a side dish to share, and the club will provide an entrée and paper products. Saturday night we will go out to eat in Grand Lake, probably at the Sage Brush. Hopefully we will get two or three days of sailing, depending on the weather and when people come. We are staying in the Stillwater campground. We have some sites in Loop C —#95, #104, #105, & #107. If you would like to join us, please go to the website www.recreation.gov under “Stillwater, Co” and reserve your campsite somewhere in the campground, if there’s openings. Campsite #107 is reserved for Bob and Ronni who have the trailer and cook site. Campsite # 105 is reserved for Diana but can share it with a tent person. Probably #107 will be our gathering place for Friday dinner. I will be sending out a list of possible hotels in the area, but you might want to go ahead and do a search for “hotels near Stillwater Campground” or you could contact this private campground nearby called Elk Creek Camp and RV Park at 970-627-8502. Let me know where you will be staying. This year we have one sailboat, one motorboat, one pontoon. My friend Kathy Z. has the motorboat up there and she can bring people water skiing, or pulling on a big floating coach, or just riding around the lake. If you are a boat owner and would like to bring your boat, please contact Diana ahead of time. The cost of the trip will be $70 for members and $105 for guests. Please pay online as soon as possible since there are limited spots. Your payment is your reservation for the trip!!
August 10th, Thursday Meeting Sail
Ahoy there…
Please sign up for the August 10th Sail online to claim your seat in a boat. It will strictly be in order of sign-up date.
The sail will commence straight after the monthly meeting at Seagulls Restaurant at Chatfield marina.
$10 for members and $15 for guests.
Boat Owners – please let me know if you are willing to share your boat with us that evening.
Thanks

Scavenger Hunt Sail on August 20th-Sunday
Come join us for the third Scavenger Hunt sail and bring your picnic lunch and sailing gear. We will be meeting at the picnic tables in front of the marina office for lunch at 11:00 and sail at 12 noon—one of the tables will be where we can sign up for boats. This will be a special boating event in which each boat will be doing a scavenger hunt. You will be given a list of items to look for while you are sailing and then get close enough to take a picture of it. The boat who gets the most items recorded on your one crew’s phone camera will get a prize at the end of the sail! It will make the sail a little more interesting!! We will have Happy Hour drinks to celebrate.
The cost is $20 members, and $30 for guests. To sign up and pay, you can go online to pay at saltydog.org or sign up at the August 10th member meeting.
Andrea Lewis is the coordinator and you can contact her by email alewis@remax.net or call 303-881-7376 with any questions.
Super Moon Sail
Friday, Aug 25th Chatfield
This should be an exciting and fun evening sailing. We will meet at the Marina at 5:00pm for dinner on the dock and sail after that until the wolves start howling at the moon. Full Moon Sailing is very majestic and puts a different perspective on gliding through the water. Bring your cool weather gear and flashlight or head lamp.
Pay online at: www.saltydog.org – Go to the Shop tab.
TIME: Meet at 17:30 – set sail about 18:15.
LOCATION: Chatfield outside of Seagulls restaurant at the tables. We’ll assign boats and there will be time for a pre-sail dinner – either bring your own or purchase it from the restaurant.
COST: $20 members, $30 guests. Your payment secures your reservation. Each boat captain will indicate the approximate time they will be returning to the dock.
Please call or text me at 303-909-0354, or email at newsletter@saltydog.org

ANNUAL DILLON LABOR DAY WEEKEND EVENT
SEPTEMBER 1ST, 2ND, AND 3RD
Attend 1, 2 or 3 days (less availability on Sunday)
Cost is $20/day for members, $30/day for guests
Please pay on-line at www.saltydog.org
Your payment confirms your reservation. We may have a waitlist.
To try to avoid the weekend traffic we’ll be sailing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, so those with flexible time schedules can possibly avoid the long weekend rush. Meeting time each morning will be 10:15 and we usually sail until late afternoon – weather permitting. More details will be sent out to participants. On Sunday, the folks who reserve multiple days will have preference over the day sailors, but we’ll try to accommodate everyone.
All meals are on your own, however we are hoping to schedule a potluck on Saturday night, and we will probably go out to dinner Friday night as a group. If you are renting a condo that could possibly accommodate the group or are staying at the Quality Inn, which has a conference room for guests, please let the coordinator know. We may need a location for the potluck.
Lodging info from Marilyn (I’ve done this event for several years). If you’re staying 3 or more nights, it can be cost effective to get a condo. I like VRBO but don’t get lured in by a low price/night. Check the total price because there are lots of additional fees. There are also some small apartments for rent in Dillon/Wildernest. LOTS of less expensive places are available in Keystone if you don’t mind the drive. Be sure to check Silverthorne and Frisco, too. Snowshoe motel is fairly inexpensive and close to the Frisco Marina. These are NOT luxurious places, but I’ve found them to be adequate and clean, but make your reservations NOW. I’ve often found free cancellation options.
Questions? Email Marilyn at homesbyma@gmail.com. Subject: Dillon Sail.
This is a fun event that fills up fast. Dillon has some of the best and most challenging sailing in our area and never boring – occasionally terrifying! It will test you!

Pricing for SDSC Sails

New Vouchers
Because of the situation of so many people signing up for the new member sail on June 25th and a few sign-up issues, a number of vouchers will be sent to new Members who paid ahead of time and could not get on a boat. When you get this voucher by email from the treasurer, you will have to print it out and when you want to sign up for another sail (equally priced sail) and use that voucher, you will have to call the coordinator of that sail to get signed up. You can either send the coordinator a photo or scan of the voucher, or hand it to them at a meeting. But remember you are not signed up until the date you show proof of the voucher. Handing out vouchers will not be the normal routine. Also, the voucher may NOT be applied toward any multi-day sail. You will need to sign up and pay online ahead of the deadline or early so you’ll get a spot. Since we have limited boats in the Denver area, and a lot of people who want to go sailing, it’s always been first come (date of payment) first served.
Salty Dog Cancellation policy
Here is our cancellation policy, as per our financial guidelines:
All persons attending a sailing event are expected to pay the full amount of the trip donation prior to departure. The cancellation deadline for multi-day events will be determined by venue. Participants cancelling prior to the deadline will be charged a 20% cancellation fee and refunded 80% of the deposit. Cancellation after the deadline will lose their deposit, except in the case of hardship. Cancellations must be dated, in writing and received by coordinator either e-mail, text or letter prior to deadline. For day sails, no refund will be given for cancellations received less than 48 hours prior to the event.
