Commodore’s Log – Diana Bliss
I hope you’re thinking about sailing to cool off from this heat! Last weekend we escaped to Dillon for two days of sailing and cooler weather up there. We had two full boats of people to fill Zeke’s and Jim’s boats. Friday was a short day because there was little wind and the storms came in early. But Saturday was much more wind and sunny. We had four hours of good sailing, then the clouds started to build up on three sides around the lake. It was looking rather ominous so we turned around to head back into the marina. I figured all three sides of clouds were going to converge together on us. Really quickly the winds increased to 20-25 miles an hour with four foot white caps. We had trouble getting into the wind to take down the sails but we finally did and with the motor going we made it safely back into Jim’s slip. Zeke’s boat was having lunch down by Silver Dollar island and came back to the wild winds and whitecaps. They took down their sails and started to motor in but then the engine quit. So they put up the jib and made it back to the dock in the rain. Then the sun came out and they had margaritas :). I’m glad that everyone made it back safely but it pays to be prepared and sail safely.
Our next member meeting is Thursday, August 11th at 5:30 PM at the Seagulls restaurant at the marina. After a short meeting in which you can sign up for up coming sails, we will go out sailing. Please pay ahead of time online, so Ron can get enough boats together. (See his announcement in this newsletter). Then the Scavenger Hunt was postponed until Saturday, August 20th. This is really a fun event to sail around and take pictures of items on the list. Then we get together at the end of the day and see who found the most items. The Winning boat gets to pick from the prize box. Then we all celebrate with Salty Dog Drinks provided at Happy Hour! Sign ups will be taken at the meeting and see Ron’s article in this newsletter. It’s not too early to think about our big weekend sail on Labor Day, Friday, September 2nd to 4th. We will be taking sign ups at the meeting and you can pay there or online. Since it’s a holiday weekend if you’re interested you might start looking for lodging soon! See Jim’s article in this newsletter.
All this fun sailing couldn’t have happened without our volunteer coordinators and boat owners. For July I would like to thank Shane, Marilyn, and Carol for coordinating sails and the Morelands, Zeke, Jim W, and Why Buy owners- Mike C, Marilyn, and Shane for sharing their boats.
So upcoming in September 8th, the Member Meeting will be moving back to the restaurant (Casa Del Sol at Garrison and 6th Ave). The Seagull restaurant will be closed early September. But let’s enjoy one more meeting on Thursday, August 11th at the Seagull for sign ups for trips and more sailing!! Hope to see all your smiling faces there! Diana

Sailgrass
It’s really going to happen.
Coordinated by Cindie and Keith Sandlin (Healing Time)
Save the Date: September 11, 2022
This will be in collaboration with the Salty Dogs Sailing Club (SDSC) and the Colorado Sail and Yacht Club (CSYC). After the CSYC pursuit race, the boat captains will “Pick up a Picker” (A Picker is a Bluegrass musician) at the courtesy dock or let the coordinator know which slip the boat is located. Captains from either club can take a picker or two for a pleasure sail on the lake. Musicians will probably not take their instruments on the boat. This will be followed by a shrimp boil and Bluegrass Jam. It has been an exciting event in the past. I will have more about Times, Cost for Shrimp Boil, location of jam and other details at the August SDSC meeting.
The latest information can be found on the CSYC Website at https://csyc.org/sailgrass-and-pursuit-race-2022/
